My Dad was recently admitted to hospital and diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with brain metastases. This diagnosis came completely out of the blue, we did not know my Dad had lung cancer and neither did he.

We have attended hospital once to discuss more tests etc and appointments were made. However to his anxieties etc he has been unable to go to these hospital appointments.

An appointment has been made again to discuss my dad's anxieties etc and what can happen going forward. If he can't go to this appointment what will happen next. Wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can offer any advice please.

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your dad has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to his brain and that because of his anxiety he hasn't attended his hospital appointments.

Do you think he'd be willing to talk to his GP about his anxiety or do you think you could go through this information from Macmillan on managing anxiety with him?

I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join and post this question in the Lung cancer forum and Secondary brain cancer forum as the community members there may be able to help you further with what happens next if your father is unable to go to his next appointment.

If you'd like to do this just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' on the pages that open. You can then copy and paste your question into a new post to save you typing it out again.

I am past the diagnosis stage and just having three monthly check-ups but at the bottom of my letters it does say that if I fail to attend then I may be discharged back to my GP. However, I don't know if they'd do this at the testing stage that your dad is at.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Wishing you and your dad all the best
