Mum was discharged nearly 3 weeks ago. She is at home with my dad. They are both 81. Dad feels abandoned in this time they have had 1 visit from the palliative  care team and 3 from the district nurse. Dad doesn't seem inclined to 'bother the professionals and has been refused permission to talk to the GP about mum (until I railroaded him into writing a letter today). When he called today he was told it was emergencies only so he didn't  order mum's  antinausea medicine that the palliative  care team said they would sort out on Wednesday.  Because of covid I am not supposed to be visiting at all (They are in Leicester). What should I expect them to be receiving? Thanks for your advice x

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that your dad is feeling abandoned by the health care system and I can understand what a difficult time this must be for you all.

I'm glad to see that you've persuaded your mum to give permission for your dad to speak to her GP as it's usually the GP who liaises with teams like palliative care when a patient has been discharged from hospital.

As your dad is your mum's main carer it might help if you take a look through this information from Macmillan as it explains what help he's entitled to and how to go about arranging it. Following on from that there's also this on caring for someone at home and this on advanced cancer care and support. All of these should provide you with the information that you're looking for and how to access it.

You, or your dad, could also ring the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 to chat through how to obtain the care your mum needs and the support that your dad needs. It's free to call and available every day from 8am to 8pm.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
