Hi guys, my mum received the diagnosis back in March (week of lockdown and of her 60th birthday, so awful timing!) of incurable lung cancer. She's experienced her taste changing and said that a lot of things she used to enjoy like potatoes for example, now just taste of metal. It's really disheartened her as she used to enjoy food and now doesnt feel like eating because it's not enjoyable. I really want to get her something that she will enjoy, and I know that this will probably vary from person to person but does anyone have any suggestions of things that might not taste awful to her? Quite worried that if she doesnt eat enough it will work against her and she will decline quicker :(
Morning
Sorry to read about your mum and seeing you joining us :-/
I'm assuming your mum is having some form of chemotherapy or treatment regime to try and stabilise her cancer and this is what is causing her metallic taste issues ? This is a very common problem the texture of food can change too and there's nothing worse than wet metallic cardboard to take the edge off your appetite. Some types of chemo can also cause mouth ulcers and/or oral thrush which just adds to it all.
There are a few things you could try her with - If her mouth isn't sore a pineapple chunk from the fridge prior to eating can kick start the taste buds, ginger nut biscuits can do the same. If she is ok with spicy foods this can help as the spices or herbs can override the metallic taste but keep the portions smallish as it can be off-putting faced with loaded plate when you have little appetite. If she isn't into spicy food try going the bland route, rice puddings, porridge, yoghurts, sandwiches etc.
You can also add higher protein foods to a meal to help with any weight loss; like butter, cream and cheese.
There is an info page with a few tips you can find here at Cancer Research UK.
Hope this is of some help until you get some more replies.
