This has all been so quick I don’t know where to start. My partner had been having pain in both legs thought to be sciatica. GP decided on a referral and sent him for blood tests. These showed some irregularities so a Haematology referral was done. Within a week he had a phone consultation which resulted in being told they suspected Myeloma so he was booked for a bone marrow biopsy  (which he had last Wednesday) and a full body MRI on Sunday. We received a phone call Monday morning from a doctor to say there was a mass on his lower spine and they needed to start radiotherapy treatment that afternoon. My partner was collected by ambulance 45 mins later. Obviously big shock but then I had to play the waiting game as obviously due to COVID I can’t go to the hospital. By end of day it was confirmed as a cancerous tumour on the lumber. Tuesday afternoon confirmed he had Multiple Myeloma. He was started on Steroids and had Radiotherapy. MDT meeting yesterday and had first Chemo in the afternoon. I was called on Wednesday by one of the Myeloma nurses who has explained plan, and then said once this first cycle was underway he can come home. Hopefully mid next week. He called last night to say he can come home today but I’ve not had a call. Basically I’m terrified! He is only 67 so perfectly able to agree to decisions but I’m overwhelmed. One big question is is it 2 separate issues as in cancerous tumour and MM because on info it says MM does not form tumours?  Sorry this message is so long so much as happened I have tried to minimise it as much as possible.

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about your partners Myeloma diagnosis.

A blood cancer diagnosis brings many questions, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma back in 1999 and it took some time to understand that blood cancers are rather different from solid tumour cancers.

Talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer treatment journey will help you navigate this challenging time.

The Community is organised into support groups and I see you have joined and posted in our supportive Myeloma group as this will be a good place to connect with patients and families navigating the same type of cancer journey.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section
