I have a funny story to tell you about a smart meter.
We changed our supplier months or years after having a smart meter installed. One day we had no gas. It turned out there was no supply coming through and after A LOT of hassling our new supplier they eventually agreed to send someone out. They replaced our smart meter. It turned out the battery in the smart meter (this was version 1 meter) had gone flat and cut off the supply. We reckon the alerts/warnings had been sent to the previous supplier who just ignored them or never received them because we weren't their customer any more. They installed a new version 2 smart meter. Needless to say we have switched our electric supplier but we dare not switch our gas based on this experience.
