Allergic reaction to stoma bag

Hiya

yet another question guys,  I am pretty new to stomas following bladder cancer and was set up with Hollister bags which sound like a crisp packet but now am getting an allergic reaction to the glue on the seal ( if this makes sense).  My stomas nurse has changed my bag to Dansac with a smaller seal.  Has anyone else had a problem with an allergy and what bag did they use?

  • I haven't had this problem personally but I know some people who have. They were allergic to different manufacturers and one ended up using Hollister. It's just very individual. Hopefully the new bags will work for you.

  • Hi

I haven’t had this issue but I have certainly heard about it from others. I hope the new bags are better for you, but if you’re still having issues you can ask many companies for free sample bags to try, and I’d search for ones which are hypoallergenic. You can normally request free samples online, and I’ve done this many times over the years to try different products. Anyone can do this, and you don’t need to go through your stoma nurse.

  • Hi

I'm allergic to coloplast and convatec. I've been using Pelican Platinum with Vitamin E for 4 years and, fingers crossed, no side effects. This is for an ileostomy though so not sure what Pelican offer for a bladder stoma. As Sarah has suggested it would be worth trying samples from as many suppliers as possible as we're all individual and what works for 1 might not work for another.  I'm pretty sure that a solution can be found. Totally agree with you on Hollister and the crisp packet effect!

    Good luck Fingers crossed

  • I haven't had the problem, but was very concerned about it happening.

I chose Welland as the seal has medical grade Manuka honey.

No redness at all and I am allergic to lots of things.

    They also do free samples.

  • Thanks for that tip just ordered a sample

I also use the spray remover, powder and spray seal.....no reactions at all.

I think they also do free samples.

It's the only products I have used and they were recommended by one of our members.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

  • Should have said spray barrier.

  • Yep use all those and wipes.  It appears I have a reaction to the “glue” on the stoma bag seal.

  • Hopefully the Manuka honey will stop any reactions. When I change my new bag it always feels comfortable and the skin soothed.

Normally I am allergic to creams, perfume plasters, even hyper allergic stuff can give me rashes and sore skin.
