Hi I’m looking for any advice on seat belt covers/guards/supports for when driving with an ileostomy?
Thanks in advance x

  • Never needed one with my permanent ileostomy and colonoxcopy. Simply adjust the lap belt to rest above the top of the pouch. You can buy a plastic clip that keeps the belt loose but reacts in an emergency stop. I find aircraft lap belts too tight so request a belt extender -  no problem.

  • Placement of your stoma makes a big difference in what you need.

In my case, the stoma is high and I just slide the lap belt under the bottom of the bag.

I've seen things called stoma guards that they use for sports etc that will go at the top of your bag to protect the stoma. Perhaps something like that will help?

  • Thank you. My ileostomy is quite high so not sure I’ll get the belt above the top of it as it’ll then rest just under my boobs - think it will be fine underneath but just wondered if anyone had had experience with these guards and whether they were worth buying as a precaution. X

  • Hi I have a permanent ileostomy and when they were marking me up for the siting of the stoma they asked about waistbands, seat belts etc so as to choose the right site for me.

I have never had to use any guards etc as the belt fits nicely around the area.

  • Sounds like your ileostomy is in a similar position on your body to both my stomas. You'll probably be fine without anything.

I've never felt the need for one though I worried about it initially... like you.
