I've had a colostomy for nearly 4 years, this last few months I either have loose stools or I'm constipated, no in-between! I have noticed lately that when my stoma is going to be active, there are lumps under the skin and they move around when I massage my stoma! This is freaking me out, to tell the truth, has anyone else had anything remotely like this?

Hi Moira
Oh my, I’m sorry to read you’ve got this worry now. I haven’t experienced the same, so can’t offer any suitable advice or reassurance, but hopefully someone else might pick up on this who can help. I do see my stoma contract when it’s about to “go” if I happen to see it without the bag on, and I do massage round it, but don’t have these lumps you mention under the skin.

Thanks Sarah, I forgot to mention I also have a parastomal hernia, maybe it's something to do with that! It's so darned painful though! On Tuesday the pain was unbearable, then it was very active and it eased a bit! Next day pain was back, not as bad but still uncomfortable! I don't see my consultant until 18th December, maybe he might know what's going on!

Oh yes Moira, I do remember about your hernia too. No experience with them either but it would be interesting to see if it’s something to do with that. At least you’ll see seeing your consultant soon and might get some answers then. Good luck!

Hi Susan,
You haven't said how long it's been since your operation, if it recent, it could be just taking time to settle or maybe it's because of your diet! It took me ages to work out what I could and couldn't eat, in fact I still haven't got it right! The lumps around my stoma were found to be hard poo, plus I had a bug! I was thinking all sorts of things of course, me being me, and it was so simple!
Hope you feel better soon,

Thank you! It's only been 4 months since my surgery and I had been thinking it was my system adjusting to its new normal. Nice to have second opinion on that!
I've been getting a crash course in caring for stomas since I have 2. Each has its own personality and challenges. But I remain grateful to have them. I wouldn't trade them for anything. They saved my life.
I'm glad to hear your problems turned out to be relatively minor. It goes to show that this is a lifelong learning process.
