Does anyone have any experience of having a bypass operation in order to try and reduce symptoms from an inoperable rectal tumor? My mum is 77 and unfortunately was told last summer that her rectal tumour was inoperable as it had attached to the pelvic bone. She is really struggling with discomfort, bleeding and bowel issues now though, it's a constant balancing act between constipation and diarrhoea. We have a meeting with her consultant soon to discuss whether a bypass operation is feasible, as she is currently on a treatment break and they said things were stable.
I just wondered if anyone else had been in a similar position, and if a bypass did help with quality of life. I know its a big operation and another consultant said she would still have the discomfort and bleeding even with a stoma, so it's just weighing up the risks and benefits. Thanks.
Hi Believer75 and welcome to the group.
I can’t offer any advice unfortunately as my situation was different and I didn’t have a bowel tumour, but hopefully you’ll hear from others soon who have relevant experience.
I’m sure it must be very difficult to have to weigh up the pros and cons of surgery, but hopefully you can have a good discussion with your mum’s consultant and get the right decision made.
Sarah xx
