Stomach Bug

Hi folks

I've managed to pick up a stomach bug from the grandkids. No sickness (yet) but output is persistent and watery. Emptying every 30 mins or so. I've upped my fluid intake but not sure on whether it's better to eat something or, as you would do normally, starve for 24 hours. It's an ileostomy I have.

Many thanks for any advice.

  • Would taking rehydration sachets help.

    Hope you feel better soon

  • Thanks Kath. Much appreciated.   X

  • With an ileostomy you will lose moisture from your digestive system any way so you should rehydrate (just with water) regularly. I find that a couple of small bananas, or a bowl of slightly under done original porridge oats (not the processed instant stuff) helps out. The advantage to those of us with an ostomy pouch - over 'normal' mortals - is that you don't have to run for the lavatory. You can stroll at leisure!

  • Thanks Dulac. Sadly, there is a mad dash for the loo now as the sickness has started. Hopefully it will settle by tomorrow and I'll make a gradual start food wise.  X

  • Both ends! That's a pity but plain water or 'flat' lemonade might help rather than straining your abdomen around the stoma. I find sneezing bad enough.

    Best Wishes,

    Dulac

  • Hey Dulac. Thanks for the moral support. These things just have to run their course and things are much calmer today ( fingers crossed it stays that way). Stoma not entirely happy as it wants FOOD, even although I don't. Sticking with plain lemonade, apple juice and isotonic lucozade (courtesy of daughter) for now but will try some dry toast at teatime. Other than that it will be a day on the sofa as I'm fair wabbit (good scottish word for you there)

    Take care.

  • Evening BlueBlue,

It sounds like you are doing the right thing and are nearly restored. A good word - most appropriate.
