Everyone must be bored silly hearing me go on about this but I've had another few weeks of constant diahorrea followed by constipation! I take Immodium to stop and Senna to start! It would be funny if it wasn't ruining my life! My stoma nurse adviced taking 1 Senna every night, which I did on Saturday! Sunday only a very little output but Monday, OMG!! One gurggle and that was it, bag nearly bursting off my body and it just wouldn't stop! Sorry to be so graphic but it was horrendous! This time I haven't taken Immodium and it did stop after an hour or so! This morning I phoned the Stoma Clinic and I've been told to go back to bland foods! I haven't a clue how to make something interesting out of mashed potatoes, chicken and white rice, no veg ! Oh, forgotten bananas and smooth peanut butter! I hate sounding so sorry for myself, apologies everyone! It wouldn't be so bad if I knew WHY this is happening after 16 months but no-one seems to know!

Apologies again,

Moira x

  • Hi Ann,

How lovely to hear you're going to Ireland! Have a wonderful time, I should visit one day as that's where my maternal ancestors are from!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Moira,

Wondering again if you have improved. My husband had another swollen tummy and sickness on Saturday and I decided enough was enough. I need to know how to manage this, so got Him back in hospital. His consultant thinks it is scar tissue affecting smooth transit. So, at least we know its not necessarily anything he has eaten. We had tried daily prune juice for 2 weeks, but obviously this wasn't enough. I think it may mean daily laxatives, or at least regular ones.  xxxx

  • Hi NannyAnny,

I thought I was doing so well on my Weetabix and prunes,( cardboard and slugs)! I hated them but they were keeping me regular! Then, last Friday, I gave into to temptation and had a Thai Green Curry! I hour later, my pouch was very full, near to bursting and I spent the next hour, in the toilet, filling goodness knows how many bags! Sorry for the graphic description!  Anyway, since then, nothing!

Like you and your poor husband, I'm fed up with not getting any answers! I just keep getting told what not to eat, which isn't helping! I want to know why it suddenly happened after a year! I think it's just going to be trial and error with me!

I'm so glad your husband has found a likely cause for his trouble! I found prunes quite good, for all I've got to hate them but prune juice was too strong! Orange juice suits me more! I take a stool softener every day and that seems to help! I DO know that I'm keeping away from spices for a while!

    Best Wishes,

  • So nice to connect with someone in a similar situation. I actually saw the surgeon yesterday and told him about the 'episodes ' he has had. I doubt husband would have said much!! I strongly believe we need to know how to manage things. He's had curries with no bother, but I am thinking these blockages would have happened anyway, no matter what we did or didn't do. I thought the prune juice was helping matters, but he obviously needs something else.

I think he was just chucked out of hospital and left to it. He had his larynx removed 14 years ago and was checked every week, and given advice (lots of problems eating initially.).Don't know if its a sign of the times, or a different department, but it hasn't been like that this time. Its only because I am at my wits end that I made him go back in and get sorted out, with some answers.

And, don't worry, we've found out what explosions are like!!!   xxxxx

  • Hi NannyAnny,

You're right, it makes such a difference talking to someone who is going through similar experiences! That's why this site has been invaluable to me! I've had more advice and helpful tips on here than I've ever had from the nurses! I appreciate all the nurses have done, please don't get me wrong, but they aren't living with it! I'm at my wit's end at the moment, I thought things were going in the right direction yesterday but nothing happened! Today is day 5 without an output of anything much so I think Illy have to take senna! I'm sure mine isn't a blockage, it always goes like this after an 'explosion'! I have mobility issues so can't do much in the way of exercise!

I hope to goodness the surgeon has put a plan into action for your husband! It must be hard on you trying to sort things out for him! My husband is very quiet, the suffer in silence type, so I have an idea what you're going through!

    Best Wishes,

  • hi lovely Ostimates - I only eat plain bio yoghurt after a meal and don't have problems. I have a colostomy.

  • hi again, I used to use co-codamol when I had an adhesions flareup which controlled the pain. It can cause constipation which meant my runny stools were thicker. (At that time I had an illiostomy which was very runny so it helped with thickening.

  • I swear this is getting. worse, it's got me demented! No matter what I eat, or don't, I have really bad diahorrea at least twice a week! It's now about 6 weeks, or even more, since I had a normal output! I was discharged from Stoma Clinic, everything was good, on the whole and I think, within the week, these problems began! I know I can still get help from Stoma team but all they tell me is its got to be diet related! After it all being great for the first year I just can't get my head around what's gone wrong! My diet is now so bland a baby would complain, no alcohol, no spices or anything and no change in medication! I've followed advice from nurses and tried everything you lovely people have suggested but still either constipation or diahorrea! After 70 years of hardly seeing a doctor, I think my wheelchair could find its own way! Even that brings problems, the GP surgery is a couple of miles away and public transport is terrible around here! My husband had a very nasty glacuma operation on Wednesday and poor man is having to put up with this!

We're supposed to be going to London for a week in September but I just can't even think about it! I don't have any idea what else I can do! Once I was told ' no visible cancer', apart from scans, I don't see anyone!

And now I've been told I have to have a hip replacement! Sorry all I do is whinge and moan, believe it or not I'm quite a happy person really, I'm just SO fedup! Thank you for listening,

  • Hi Three,

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling. It is nearly 2 weeks since husband went into hospital. They cleared the blockage, but he was sick again yesterday, and they got a load of stuff out of his tummy again!! If at home he would have sicked all that up!! He is fed up, so am I !!!

Just hope you never need an ambulance I rang at 6pm to take my husband in. By 8pm I just wanted him in and rang a friend for help. Went to bed at 10pm after cancelling the ambulance from the hospital. At 12pm (6 hours after ringing) the ambulance arrived!!!! I really despair of the medical facilities these days. If you get to see a doctor its a miracle. Much Love xxxxx

  • KATH H2 Can I ask what your adhesion flare up was?
