Hi all, I was hoping some of you would have some tips and tricks for dealing with sweating under the bags.

My husband has recently had a TPE and now has a urostomy and colostomy bag. Overall he’s been doing really well with them but the loverly weather has caused some new challenges. As this is all still very new to us (10 weeks post surgery), he’s still getting used to everything and finding that where he’s sweating under his urostomy, he’s constantly worried it’s a leak. Any tips on how to minimise this? Is it something as simple as spray deodorant or could this damage the seal on the bags?
he’s been quite fortunate and is already back to gardening and is being pretry active so would love to help with this little annoyance - I know it’s a small thing in the grand scheme of things but if he can be more comfortable it just makes life easier.

hes also not had a great time with the hernia belts as both times he wore it he got leaks. As I said he’s starting to feel much better and wants to get back to exercising more at the gym and swimming, but as he already may have a small hernia he wants to be sensible. The stoma nurse mentioned a different type he can have which goes around the bag rather than over but he can’t get that until the stomas have settled. Any advice or tips to use the current belt (a wrap with Velcro) would be hugely appreciated.

We’re really grateful he’s doing so well after such a huge surgery and amazed at how active he already is after a short time so just looking at how we can make these small things a bit easier.

Thanks for reading and appreciate any tips and advice Slight smile

  • Hi

Great to read that your husband is doing so well. Not the same surgery as me but from what I've read it seems pretty major so he's got a great attitude.

With regards to the sweating my stoma nurse told me that one of the suppliers had said that non-scented roll on anti perspirant (not deodorant) was a handy thing to use if the pouches weren't sticking in hot weather (Mum do one). It needed to be roll on rather than spray and non scented (because its close to the stoma).  I haven't tried it but I think the trick is to apply it, let it dry and then fix the pouch. It helps with adhesion apparently. Not sure if this is the problem you're husband is having or if it's that he's sweating underneath the pouch but I'd imagine that the same trick might help on the area surrounding the pouch too. I can't help with the hernia belt I'm afraid as I don't use one. I think it's easier for us ladies as we can use support pants instead. It's a pity that they don't do something similar for men.

Hopefully this helps a bit but I'm sure that others will be along soon with more ideas. X
