Everyone must be bored silly hearing me go on about this but I've had another few weeks of constant diahorrea followed by constipation! I take Immodium to stop and Senna to start! It would be funny if it wasn't ruining my life! My stoma nurse adviced taking 1 Senna every night, which I did on Saturday! Sunday only a very little output but Monday, OMG!! One gurggle and that was it, bag nearly bursting off my body and it just wouldn't stop! Sorry to be so graphic but it was horrendous! This time I haven't taken Immodium and it did stop after an hour or so! This morning I phoned the Stoma Clinic and I've been told to go back to bland foods! I haven't a clue how to make something interesting out of mashed potatoes, chicken and white rice, no veg ! Oh, forgotten bananas and smooth peanut butter! I hate sounding so sorry for myself, apologies everyone! It wouldn't be so bad if I knew WHY this is happening after 16 months but no-one seems to know!

Apologies again,

Moira x

  • Do you have a colostomy or an iliostomy as they work quite differently re what foods they like.I tried to read your former posts but couldnt find it

  • hi there all, I've got divertivulitis as well which is a bit of a nuisance. Yoghurt as long as it's plain is really good for the intestines. The Yeo probiotic one is really good not the fruit yogs though.Banana is good and Lactolose with senna if things get stuck. Lactolose you buy in the pharmacy. Fish and egg cause me no problems either. As people say it's all trial and error.

  • Hi Kath,

I have a colostomy and for 12 months  I had no problems but now, I'm either running to empty pouch or taking senna to relieve constipation after 5 days, no matter what I eat!

  • Hi NannyAnny,

Your poor husband, and he didn't even get his curry? Did you phone your stoma nurse about him feeling sick? It's such a worry when you just can't find an answer! In my case, I'm either told, by my stoma nurse, to either take senna or eat jelly babies! I KNOW all this but it doesn't tell me why I'm going through either constipation or diarrhoea, all in the same week! I have more help on here, from people who actually have a stoma!

I  had Weetabix and prunes for 5 days and I went a tiny bit but nothing really! I took a senna last night so I'm fully expecting to have to run and empty my pouch in the next hour or so! Then back to nothing! I'm also going crazy with this! I'm trying to find out if it's normal to have softer stools with a colostomy!

I don't think walking on a warm day would have done any harm but I would check out your husband feeling sick! I really hope the prunes work for him!

    Best Wishes,

  • Hi Ann,

Yoghurt goes straight through me!  I'm expecting the senna to work soon but it's only a temporary fix, by tomorrow there will be nothing again! My Stoma nurse said to take a stool softener every day but my stools are either very soft or none existent! Bananas and jelly babies just make me constipated and Weetabix and prunes didn't help with that! I give up! I could do with that sunshine you're sending my way! Here,  carry sun cream in one hand and a brolly in the other!

  • Hello Three,

I'm sorry to read about your problem.  Worrying about it is unavoidable but can't be helping.

I'm a bit puzzled as, as it was explained to me, stools aren't formed in the colon, they're formed, with added aroma, in the - now redundant - rectum.  My stoma produces paste of varying thickness - through to slurry if I have the runs.  As I change my pouch my stoma sometimes works a bit and the paste is cut off into bits by the stoma, giving the appearance of stools. The bits have no integrity, it's more like what happens when you release the pressure on a tube of thick paint or similar.

What foods did you need to be wary of in your 'previous life'?  How often did you go?  If you've not been told of any restrictions, have you reverted to you old diet with no thought for your stoma?  That's worked for me over the last fourteen+ months - the runs were caused by medication.

Another thought - my stoma has slowed a lot recently - iust as we changed to summer salads, etc.

    Hope this helps a bit..

  • When the yogurt goes through doesn’t it take anything with it?  Are you a colostomy Moira because I may be giving you the wrong advice. We need more input from others
Fingers crossed for you and some sun. I didn’t get out to sit I worked. I always do that. Say I’m going to rest and see work in the garden

  • Hi Bagpuss,

You have really helped me a lot! My output has gone from nothing, to watery, to what you've described as a thicker paste like appearance! No-one has ever told me anything like that! So is the thicker stool ' normal'? When I think about it, it certainly seems to be! I did revert quite quickly to my old diet, without problems until this last few months! I've never been adventurous so I didn't bother much! Same as going to open my bowels, very irregular but I never really thought about it, again until lately! I'm on a boatload of medication which I know can cause constipation but not diarrhoea, as far as I know! My stoma nurses don't seem bothered about it but they don't have to worry about always knowing where the nearest toilet is!

The only restrictions I've been warned about are nuts! Which I love but now I never touch! However, the senna has worked today, thick output, but there will probably be nothing else for days, until I take another senna!

    Thanks again,

    Moira

  • Hi Ann,

No, the yoghurt just comes back the same as it went in, within an hour or less! Yes, I have a colostomy!

Glad I don't garden, I'd need a hat and coat on! We even had heating on for a short while yesterday! I'm emigrating South!

    Best Wishes,

    Moira xx
