Everyone must be bored silly hearing me go on about this but I've had another few weeks of constant diahorrea followed by constipation! I take Immodium to stop and Senna to start! It would be funny if it wasn't ruining my life! My stoma nurse adviced taking 1 Senna every night, which I did on Saturday! Sunday only a very little output but Monday, OMG!! One gurggle and that was it, bag nearly bursting off my body and it just wouldn't stop! Sorry to be so graphic but it was horrendous! This time I haven't taken Immodium and it did stop after an hour or so! This morning I phoned the Stoma Clinic and I've been told to go back to bland foods! I haven't a clue how to make something interesting out of mashed potatoes, chicken and white rice, no veg ! Oh, forgotten bananas and smooth peanut butter! I hate sounding so sorry for myself, apologies everyone! It wouldn't be so bad if I knew WHY this is happening after 16 months but no-one seems to know!

Apologies again,

Moira x

  • Artsie, perhaps, like me, Blackstuff is lucky (so to speak).  That was the term used to me when I was back in the ward after my colostomy.  'You're lucky - it's so low down you can eat or drink anything!'  And I do. New potatoes in their skins, sweetcorn on the cob, whole grapes and cherry tomatos, for example.  Bizarrely, before the operation I'd had to give up raw onion and blueberries.  I took some onion by accident months ago with no effect, so I've carried on in moderation.  And this week gone my granddaughter, unknowing, made us all a blueberry cheesecake for my birthday cake - so (based on the onion result) I ate my portion and my wife and I waited - no problems!  I've had more of it since - super!

I'm very sad when I read that so many of you have to forgo the things you like.  It must be hard on top of everything else.

  • Hi NannyAnny,

I'm so glad your husband is feeling better! My problems only started to get this bad a few months ago but I can't work out WHY! I've eaten fish and chips and all sorts of thing, including Thai Green Curry, without any problem, but now this! At the moment I'm trying a few prunes on a morning, with cereal, rather than taking laxatives, so we shall see!

Thank you for the update about your husband,

    Best Wishes,

  • Hi Bagpuss the Third

Sorry for the late response. I don’t seem to be mastering replies like I should.
Thanks for your lovely post, I do miss sweetcorn and other things however it was so intolerable when I had the cancer, I didn’t realise why I responded to food I loved with that nasty thing inside. It caused me so much grief that now I am managing so much better without it. I eat white bread! That’s amazing I could not touch it before I bloated straight away. There’s always a silver lining. I’ve found a new diet and I’m cancer free touch wood.

Thanks again. You enjoy the sweet corn. I ate so much of the stuff. I must fess up I have tried a kernel, I chewed it so much that I didn’t like it. JoySweat smileJoy

Maybe one day I will. Oh and I’ve eaten nuts but I got jaw ache

  • Hi Moira

Ive been thinking about you.  I wondered did you have Bowel problems before?
It’s just that my hubby has terrible issues and has had for years. It flares up. He’s had tests and diagnosis, not cancer but IBS then diverticulitis.

Now if he flares up he goes to the foods that suit him.  It’s not anything in a book or doctors orders, that didn’t work.

One day a doctor said you need to find what suits your body.  For him it’s not particularly healthy stuff but it works. He never has high fibre in his diet. If he does it’s little and I make it often.
I thought that if you had a problem before then maybe you’re having an episode like my hubby gets and you can go back to normal ie fish and chips or curry when it settles.
Yogurt is a good one to try. That was the first thing that worked for him. Funny thing is he can’t stand the stuff normally but if his tums bad it appears in the fridge.
I hope things improve and you can get back to eating food you enjoy

  • Hi Ann,

I've been thinking  about the very same thing! I can remember being a child and being given syrup of figs or senna tea! As I grew older I never even thought about being constipated, to me it was normal to have bowel movements a week or more apart! Plus, whenever I've been stressed,  to have diarrhoea! It wasn't until I started having issues that I seem to think of nothing else!  What gets me is that for over a year after the operation I could eat fine! Like your husband, I adjusted things when I needed to! Now for this to happen is like ' pay back!'

I'd like to try yoghurt but what effect will it have? I suppose at the moment it's trial and error! Also is it normal for output to be softer than before? I'm sure I read somewhere that it was!

I'm LOVE to have some Thai Sweet Chilli but at the moment I'm just happy to eat anything that doesn't upset my temperamental Brooke!

    Thanks Ann,

    Best Wishes,

    Moira x

  • I think natural yogurt comes out as it goes in and it’s got healthy bacteria so it may help. Even those probiotics drinks maybe good. I like them though they don’t stay long with Whoopi.

  • Hi Moira

    How are you.?

I’m hoping things are moving along nicely.
Sorry about the pun I couldn’t resist.

Weather heating up in the south a garden day for me. Pottering about I don’t actually get much done when I’m sat under the magnolia!

  • Hi Ann,

Really just the same! I thought I had it sussed, Weetabix with prunes, ( mush and slugs!) for breakfast and a nice, bland chicken dinner or something with rice, for my evening meal, and the occasional banana thrown in! But you've guessed it, constipation or almost, a little smearing, for 5 days! Now I've taken a Senna and I'm waiting results! I honestly think this is just going to be something I've got to accept! It's a pain but at least I'm still here to moan about it!

Lucky you with the nice weather! Up here, in the north, we get the odd warm day, but the wind or rain spoils it! We're hoping to go to the coast on Wednesday but it's probably going to be thick jumpers and raincoats! We hold great hopes for July! Enjoy your lovely day with the magnolia!

    Best  Wishes,

  • Hi Moira,

I've been wondering how you were. My husband was fine until Saturday evening. We had been a two and half mile walk, about to have curry (homemade) and he felt full!!! His tummy had blown up, he was sick, then a pile of runny stuff came out the stoma. The tummy went down again. He spent most of yesterday sleeping, but is fine today. We never really started on the prune juice, but have from today. We tried to get a laxative down him as soon as he felt full, but that just came straight back up, which is why we are trying the prunes daily!!!

I did wonder if we should have walked on a warm day, but as he pointed out, half was under shady trees anyway. And he had a drink half way round.

I'm following you with interest !!!!! I'm at my wits end with this. xxx

  • Hi Moira.
It must be so annoying. I hope the senna works.

I wonder if you had a day where you ate nothing but yogurt type meals. Smoothies can be high in protein, yogurt great for bacteria. Prune juice get you going..I find that if I eat foods like weetabix it makes my output really thick as I am an ileostomy.

Fingers crossed for you and I will send some of our sun up country
