Pancaking

Hi Folks

Does anyone know where I can buy Brava liquid deodorant (or equivalent) for my stoma bag without a prescription. I get one a month from my GP/supply company but I am always on the point of running out before the next one arrives which makes me very anxious as it seems to be the only thing that stops continual pancaking.

I've tried Amazon but they only seem to have a gel.

Grateful for any suggestions.

  • I found this impossible to get unless you sign up to the suppliers. I managed two small samples. I am only allowed two prescribed items and this wasn’t on the list   So I made my own.
Baby oil and essential oil mixed. Use the baby oil until a gap at top. Take lid off essential oil and fill shake. Job done. I started with lavender oil but now I’ve  found a good mix that suits me.
Ebay does sell it at a price.
I hope this helps. My way does save money and is easy to do but don’t use too much it can be oily

  • Thanks. I think I will try Artsie's DIY version first.

  • Thanks. I have tried olive oil on the advice of my stoma nurse but I found it much too messy. I'll try baby oil mixed with lavender oil and see if that's any better.

  • It works and give fast evacuation of the output but it can be over done causing the oil to come through the vent at the top so I would suggest experimenting first.
I was told to also try Vaseline applied through the top and spread around the plate at the back before sticking it on.
I didn’t find this worked for me as my Ileostomy needs emptying every two to three hours.
But it may be good for you.
Baby oil and Vaseline are both inexpensive

I am now also trying to wash mine out with water. But that’s with practice if I put too much water in it could reach the stoma and opening causing a problem with the stick ability of my pouch then I could have a leak.

So I would experiment and find what suits you.

  • Hi Limassol

Can I ask why you cannot be provided with 2 a month on prescription? Over the past couple of years I have changed my prescription request multiple times depending on my changing needs, and discovering new products. I have never had an issue in getting my prescription signed off by the gp when I put in my request via my stoma supply company. Nothing has ever been questioned or refused. If I want to try something new, I simply request it.

I think I would be trying that route, since you have found a product that suits you and you’re comfortable with. Good luck with whatever route you choose.

  • Hi Sarah

Thats a great suggestion which I tried and was told flat they will not give me a script for deodorant. I said.” I don’t need your script I will make my own” That’s why I did it.

I think it depends on your health authority. I’m only allowed two script items and my two are the pouches and Eakin slims. I can’t manage without them. I did buy the slims once before I managed to get them on the prescription they’re so expensive.

Hopefully Limassol will have more luck than I did.
If not there’s a back up plan.

  • Hi Ann

It must be one of these postcode lottery things where some people get an advantage depending on their location. I have 6 main prescription items, plus my wet and dry wipes and disposal bags and would be so stressed if I couldn’t get what I needed. Only being allowed limited items to deal with a medical condition seems very unjust. I cannot always be sure how much I will need so some months use much more than others if it’s been a bad month with leaks or having the runs for example. I’m very grateful I’m allowed to request what I need to be able to live my life and try new products if I wish.

I hope Limassol finds good results from your diy solution if she uses that but I just feel we should be provided with what we need rather than having to find diy ways of doing things.

  • Must be a postcode thing.Ive had no bother getting bags, remover spray and powder.however my gp wont let me order direct from the suppliers so I have to order via the gp who then send an order to the supplier.its fine but you have to remember to order at least 2 weeks in advance as it all takes time (even tho they supposedly send it via the internet!!)RoflRoflRoflkath

  • Yes that’s  what I thought. I’m okay with my stuff so I’m going to leave well alone. My stoma nurses ordered my script to my GP to my supplier now when I order I go straight to my supplier and my GP confirms it through email. I don’t want to upset the system. My orders fast and effective so I’m happy to leave it be

i don’t really need more things at this moment I have tried the barrier spray but I reacted so I use the Eakin slims and convex pouches it suits my skin.
