Serotonin, Diet, Ileostomy and Depression

I’ve just stumbled across something that has stopped me in my tracks

Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. This amino acid must enter your body through your diet and is commonly found in foods such as nuts, cheese, and red meat.

I’ve been taking Citalopram since just before Christmas thinking that it was needed as I had an overload of emotional and health challenges.

Now I am wondering if my diet and having a sleeping bowel has also tipped the scales in my mood as Citalopram encourages serotonin

Interesting

  • Thats interesting.so is the problem too much or too little seratonin.?

I will start investigating.thanks for the info

  • I think as far as I’ve worked it out I need to eat nuts, dairy and red meat also have a functioning bowel. I’m not sure if I’m jumping the gun a little but it seems easier for me to take a 10mg tablet than chew nuts and steak

So I am not getting enough in my diet or I’m not processing whatever I do eat

maybe the depression and anxiety that I felt in November was a lack of serotonin.  I definitely haven’t got that grey cloud over me now

  • I’m going to phone the stoma nurses and my GP as I think this may be important for all. I will keep you updated

  • I contacted the stoma team they were very interested and said that it needs research to gather evidence so maybe if funding is allowed we may get a scientific answer. I am certain that I definitely lack serotonin and will carry on taking my little pill
