I have an ileostomy and I take slow release sodium tablets but I have noticed occasionally they come straight out of my bag whole will that mean I not absorbing them ? It's not all the time just sometimes.

  • Hi HazG, I used to see pills come through whole occasionally. I think there can be a problem with slow release pills and an ileostomy and logically it would make sense that they haven't been absorbed. It may depend on how quick your output is. I should check it with your nurse or whoever issued them anyway.

  • Hi HazG. I’ve wondered about that happening so I’m finding this really interesting. I was given capsules by mistake from the Dr and took one. Then realised that I’d been told they’re no good with ileostomies as they go through too quickly

I had no out put for six hours. I used heat. Massage and gentle exercise. Stoma nurse said that it couldn’t be the capsules . I’m not sure but I won’t take them again. They were meant to thicken the output. Ha ha they stopped it. I use stodgy food instead.

  • hiya, capsules were no use to me- went straight through me. What works best for me is Loperamide (immodium) tablets. I ask for the Norimode brand. For some reason this brand works better than the other brands.

  • sorry - forgot to say - take 2 Loperamide tablets half an hour before each meal and two at bedtime. This meant taking eight tablets a day.

  • Thanks Katg

That’s what the stoma nurses prescribed for me. I repeatedly told my pharmacy that I had to have tablets not capsules. They gave me capsules.
Thanks Kath. I’ll try again if I get a flare up

  • I had the same problem .Having Epilepsy it's a case of must have .Hospital have me prescription and GP said Can't give you them .Phoned Consultant  ,30 min later .phone call from GO to come and get Grimacingem    .SortedGrimacing

  • if you have to use capsules in the short term pull the capsules apart and empty contents into your mouth. Not ideal but this worked better for me until I got the tablets. I can't see why your pharmacist can't order tablets.

  • Thanks Kath.
I’ll give that a go. My pharmacist is rural based attached to my doctors. Covid seems to have really caused issues with them functioning. I’ve had a lot of problems.
