Stoma blockage

Hi all hope everyone is keeping well, just wanted a bit of advice really.
my Dad has got a colostomy but maybe about once every 4/6 weeks if he hasn’t had any output for a couple of days he’s just all of a sudden starts vomiting which I think is a blockage somewhere, it happened the other day while he was out and it he just couldn’t stop being sick and also then he had loads of output and burst the bag so it was everywhere, really embarrassing and not a nice experience especially when being out. Has anyone else experienced this also and do you think it’s food maybe blocking it?
as soon as he’s finished being sick and after he got home and cleaned himself all up he felt much better but obviously we can’t have this keep happening as you just don’t know when it comes on and you could be anywhere.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated thank you. Danni

    Hi Danni

Really sorry to hear about dad and his problems. Having a blockage is no fun, you mention that dad is nauseous but is he also in pain in the abdominal area.

I think that this should mentioned to his stoma care nurse to see if she thinks dad needs a colonoscopy through his stoma to see what is causing the blockage or the next time it happens seek advice from NHS 111.

Hopefully these episodes will stop soon.

    Best wishes

    Hi Ian

hope your well and thanks for the reply. I think a couple of days earlier he did have pains in his stomach like trapped wind but no output so it’s like something is stuck and it couldn’t get through and it made him so sick and like the sick released the blockage because the output went everywhere like it just burst open the bag. He not had any output again today so he’s thinking of taking a movicol sachet to see if that gets him going. No fun at all this.
yes I do keep telling him to phone the Stoma nurse but my Dad hates fuss and just likes to think he can get on with it and deal with it. So is that what they do to find out of there is a blockage do a colonoscopy? So you have to take that stuff to clear you out in the same way. Thanks again
