Colonoscopy with an Ileostomy

Hello everyone,

I'm at the beginning of my cancer journey after having a colonoscopy at the end of March which found a tumour blocking my colon.  I had surgery to remove the tumour at the beginning of April, which they had to do open rather than keyhole which has resulted in my having an ileostomy.  I've now started chemo (FOLFOX).

I have an appointment to complete the colonoscopy, that was blocked by the tumour, next week and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience they can share?

I've been told I don't need to do the laxative prep this time (hoorah!) as everything is diverted before it gets to my large intestine, but will be met by a stoma nurse before the colonoscopy for them to do something and was wondering if anyone has any insight into what they might do and what to expect.

Thanks for your help,

chdeb

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I haven't had the type of surgery that you'll be having but I noticed that your post hadn't had any response yet. By replying yo you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the page.

You could also post your questions in the bowel cancer group, which I can see you're a member of, as there will probably be people in that group who will be able to share their experience of this type of operation with you. Clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there if you want to post there as well.

I notice from your profile that you live in Switzerland, so you'll need to take into account that any experiences shared with you might not be the same as you'll receive as most people in the group will be based in the UK.

    Wishing you all the best

My apologies for getting back to with in information you requested.

Personally, I've not had a colonoscopy through my stoma but I understand it is a common procedure.

    Perhaps this booklet https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.colostomyuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Colonoscopy-through-the-stoma.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjkxd6j2rPpAhWXSxUIHaw3DHcQFjAAegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw2Zw1tbI-kAUUQvFAkG792q

  • I thought I'd update my post with my experience:

I was met by my stoma nurse 90 mins before the colonoscopy and she did the prep with me.  This included pouring the laxative prep into the large intestine opening of my stoma while I sat on the toilet in order to clear anything remaining in my large intestine from pre-op and also any buildup of mucus.   It was occasionally a little uncomfortable but didn't hurt.  I did throw up once towards the end, but I'm not sure if that was because of the prep or because I'd had a chemo infusion the day before.  She ended up pouring 7 litres of the stuff through me, by which time I was mostly clean, but was still passing a small amount of mucus.

The colonoscopy was pretty standard, the doctor afterwards said it was pretty common for people prepped by the stoma nurse to not be completely clean as there are areas and bends in the colon that are difficult to be flushed out by this method.

Hope that helps someone in the future.

    Deb
