Hello everyone, Although I had my ileostomy many years ago in 1979 aged 23, I thought I would like to say hello. I am now 66 and have newly been diagnosed with womb cancer, which until the situation with the corona virus situation improves I am having hormone treatment for Megace.
Ileostomy bags and equipment has improved over the years and also access to stoma nurses. I remember feeling overwhelmed post-op, but please be reassured that coping with a stoma is not quite as daunting as it seems at first.
Best wishes to you all
Welcome to stoma support seeing the length of time you've been an ileostomate I've no doubt that you couldn't teach us a thing or two. You'd think that stoma bags as we know them now have been around for years but even the last 10 years many improvements have been made and I just can't image what a bag looked like or the material used was like in the 80's.
Thanks for taking the trouble to pop in to say hello and hope we'll see you again soon although I very much suspect that your time will taken with the treatment for your womb cancer, which I'm very sorry to hear about but I'm sure you will find a tremendous amount of support over in the Womb (uterus) cancer forum group and the very supportive members are always about to give you any help and advice you need.
Its was nice to meet you and hope that all the necessary treatment you need is available as soon as normality resumes.

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to update you on my progress. Having had an Ileostomy in 1979 for Ulcerative Colitis, and a few other surgeries with full abdominal incisions, gall bladder, large ovarian cyst drainage with attempted hysterectomy, and also a bowel repair, I was diagnosed with womb cancer in March this year. Following CT scan and MRI I had a face to face appointment with consultant who initially proposed that a hysterectomy be carried out in 3 months time and this may also need Colorectal surgeon. However during my next telephone appointment I was told that that on receiving my surgical notes, I was not going to be considered for surgery. I was shocked as my womb cancer had been diagnosed as stage 1B grade 2 fairly early and a slower growing cancer. During the consultation I asked if I could have a second opinion and there was no hesitation on the part of the consultant.
To be brief, I requested my medical records from my local hospital and took these along with me to my appointment. I was examined and had a full discussion with the consultant who felt she was able to offer surgery. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and Although this was a lengthy op of 6 hours And I had a small section of small bowel removed my Stoma was not disturbed. I am recovering well. The cancer was restaged after histology report to stage 1B grade2. I have been told will not need further treatment.
I am so thankful for all the care that I received And for the skill of both the Gynaecological and Colorectal Surgeons.
I found the Macmillan site and the Community forums so helpful and a great support. Thank you for listening and I hope this may be of help or interest to anyone who maybe facing further ops after major abdominal surgery.
Keep safe and well
