Running out of the dry wipes to clean my stoma

Hi everyone

Coleplast provides me with dry wipes complimentary to clean my stoma I've had a good few occasions lately where it's been like a volcano when I change the bag and have used a few more than expected, my stoma nurse told me if I ran out of these to use kitchen towel well here's the problem I can't purchase any kitchen towel around here for love or money . Any suggestions to what else I could use as toilet paper just disintegrates when wet and leaves bits on the stoma , not keen on getting more sore skin

Thanks stay safe

Lots of love

    Hi Peacock,

We are living in challenging times at the moment, in more ways than one. Are you able to contact Coloplast for more dry wipes? If not, does your GP surgery or stoma nurse have a supply to keep you going? My bum wound never healed and I use guaze swabs to absorb the stuff that comes out from the wound, and those might be ideal for you as a short-term answer. You can get them on amazon,

Cotton Gauze Swabs 8 Ply 10 cm x 10 cm White Paper Packs (Pack of 100) - £5.65. Your local chemist will probably have them in stock.

They'll do just as good a job until you can get things sorted out.

Hope you find something to keep you going.

    Take care,

    Linda xx

Hi, you can use cotton wool and water, I personally got biodegradable 100% water wipes on line, which are great, then just dry around the area with loo roll. If your running low though I believe your stoma nurse may carry some supplies of dry wipes. I also know huggies do a water wipe but I don't think it's 100% and I was told to stear clear of anything other than water as I think it compromises the seal.

If it really gets tough, a flannel you can wash maybe?

    Good luck

When I needed them I used to get them from Amazon, not too expensive and great delivery. Best of luck. Peter.

The thing we all dread running out of dry wipes at a crucial moment and with many of the supply companies insisting on supplying 8" X 8" squares with not many in them a pack can be  in easily used in a bad change.

The customer services team at Coloplast are very obliging and I'm sure if you ask nicely they will send you a few packs although I'm not too sure on their policy about sending dry wipes without ordering pouches as this is part of NICE drug tariff on the supply of items. But you don't know what you'll get if you don't ask.

Order your next order of pouches urgently.

I thought it would be an easy exercise to go onto Amazon or eBay and pick up a few which you can at a price, the best I found was on Amazon, Conti Dry wipes which are the same size as man tissues and come in packs of a 100 the price shown was £8.64 for 3 packs includes standard delivery.

    Conti patient dry wipes

You could use fragrant free baby wipes to wipe up something from the waterless or bamboo range.

Have a dedicated flannel that you could use to wash your skin and stoma or if convenient play the shower head over the skin to clean the poo and, sorry, rub your skin with your hand and dry with a towel or a quick 20 seconds using the hairdryer on a coolish setting to dry the skin off.

Ask your stoma care nurse if she has some tucked away in her car.

To be honest not too sure  about cotton wool as the fibres will attach to your stoma.

Do you have a car spares depot near to your home, if so they might have some of the blue rolls that mechanics clean their hands with or a cash and carry that supplies cafes as they use something similar.

To gloat a bit if it happened to me I know my supply company would send me out packs the next day and give me a choice of sizes.

If you ever use the large size you don't always need a complete one. I tear some into strips of 3 and wipe around the skin using the the strips once I've used a big one to do the initial clean.

I hope you manage to find a solution quickly, I'm sure we are interested in knowing how you overcome the problem.

Well done Coloplast for coming to the rescue.

To satisfy my curiosity can you tell me the size of the wipes they supply and do you have the opportunity to ask for the number of packs you want.

With my supplier I have a choice of 3 sizes and can request quite a few packs as I need.
