Hi folks

It's now been almost 2 weeks since I got released from hospital with a loop illestomy. My first week didn't go too well due to a lot of redness and soreness around the stoma. It turns out my stoma is abit withdrawn and the bags I was issued with by the hospital were flat and with my stoma withdrawn slot of poo was going under the bags onto my skin hence the redness and soreness.....ouch is all I can say. Finally Tuesday this week I went and saw the main stoma nurse at the hospital and I now have a Hollister convex bag and belt. As the convex bag has a plastic round element to it allowing it to push down on my belly and on turn pushing my stoma up n outwards meaning all the poo now goes into the bag and not on my skin. Yesterday I had a visit from the community stoma nurse and she changed the bag again and is happy the way my skin is recovering and I feel a lot better as no leakage so far since Tuesday. The majority of last week was spent changing the bags upto 5 times a day sometimes with constant leakage so a drastic improvement. Bodach I have had lots of samples through the post this week thanks to your post with the links to various companies and as I said before much appreciated and definitely we are here to help eachother. Finally I have no issues with having a stoma I am completely comfortable with it and see it as a major improvement than the nasty side effects I had prior to surgery.

    Hi Mark

Glad you are making good progress and things are improving.

Whilst I suggest many things when it comes to changing from flat bags to convex ones it is only when the stoma care nurses examine the skin and how the stoma is lying can they assess the need to change over to convex, whilst I can suspect that is the way forward I can't actually suggest it, but this was my thinking when we first started talking. If you find you need some support wear in the future let me know and we can discuss the alternatives.

I can suggest, however, all other products to help resolve any skin problems and offer solutions to solving leakages and my knowledge and training is available to all who ask at anytime.

The one thing we would all agree on spending a great part of the day changing pouches is sole destroying and does not help improve the quality of life, once we get the leakage and changing under control we can start to rebuild our lives and get out there and enjoy life carrying your man bag discreetly holding any items you think you might need, overtime you'll gradually reduce what you carry and be more relaxed. No doubt you are looking forward to your first main outing to the pub, restaurant, theatre or to visit friends, once you get the first one under your belt you'll find a great deal of relief.

Just a thought have you got your genuine RADAR key and can't wait toilet card as an ostomate you are technically classed as being disabled and fully entitled to use all available disabled toilets.

As always in the future any problems at any time you know the name give me a shout out and I'll be there for you.

Get your genuine (large or small) genuine RADAR key by joining Me+

(In my opinion you can't have too many RADAR keys providing they are genuine one stamped NKS)

I have had a delivery today from charter where the community stoma nurse placed the order yesterday while she was here on her home visit. Amongst the items I received today included the Radar Key and card and when I left hospital after surgery I had a key from them with my bag of goodies. I had my first outing last Thursday but unfortunately that wasn't a joyous occasion as it was my mom's funeral but luckily that was the only day I didn't have many problems hopefully mom was looking down on me then. I am off out for tea on Friday for a belated birthday meal and drink as I was in hospital on my birthday and had Ileostomy surgery the following day. So here is to a great meal and few drinks on Friday.

    Regards Mark

  • Sorry to hear that your first outing was such a sad one. I have found Charter to be brilliant. Really friendly and very prompt with orders. Did they ask you if you’d got dietary advice? They sent me a brilliant booklet encouraging eating all food groups! I have convex bags due to the flat ones leaking. Life changing isn’t too strong a statement. I hope you enjoy your belated birthday celebration. Keep moving forward with your recovery. Best wishes.
