Hi everybody I had my Anterior resection on the 17th October with a temporary stoma all was going well with the stoma and I was walking and doing more each day the early Saturday morning I was rushed to hospital with servere stomach pains .To cut a long story short after the scans etc the docs said I had adhesions from the scar tissue most of the while in hospital I was on fluids only with a drip also  just being allowed to eat on Monday. My stoma gave a watery output which I expected being on fluids but now I'm home it's still high output and watery has anybody got any advice I'm trying to munch marshmallows and eat stodgy food . I was on a lot of morphine and other painkillers do you think I just need to let it settle . As usual my mind starts thinking all sorts . Thanks for reading

I'm sorry to hear that you had to return to hospital, not what you expected so soon after your major surgery.

It could be the after effects of the intravenous fluids but I believe that morphine can cause constipation not liquid output.

Perhaps this leaflet might help you

    High Output Stoma

It might be necessary to start taking Loperamide in a high dosage to bring the output under control

You should make sure that you don't get dehydrated and it might be a good idea to start to take the St Mark's Drink Solution the recipe is in above leaflet. The general advice is to substitute your normal liquids with the St Mark's solution.

I would suggest that you speak with your stoma care nurse.

And now for the part that none of likes to do - measure your output and keep a note for your stoma care nurse.

If you want a change from marshmallows you could alternate on to jelly babies or eat jellies made with gelatin, the real stuff!

Hope everything improves soon no doubt you will keep us informed how you are getting on.

  • Hi Ian

Thank you so much for the information. The St Marks solution looks interesting to try . I think I will call the stoma nurses tomorrow to check. Hubby has just made me a jelly so will give that a try tonight . I will keep you updated

  • Hi Ian

I called my stoma nurse as suggested yesterday and she told me to take loparamide 3 times a day 20mins before eating. and also to take some  replenishing salts. She said if it doesn't change I must go to A&E . I spent most of yesterday feeling really weak but took the salts and 2 lots of loparamide I noticed a bit of a difference I was  loathe to take the last lot of loparamide as last week i took some and then ended up with exrutiating pain and in hospital . I think that was a coincidence as I am ok thismorning so will go for 3 times today and hope for even more improvement. Desperate to avoid a trip to A&E   Just one thing is it normal to loose weight when you first have a stoma ? Thanks for all your tips

My stoma care nurse, who has discovered that I am The Bodach, told me a few weeks ago that she and few of her colleagues agree that the advice I give is spot on but they really appreciate that I always suggest that a contact should be made with them for confirmation.

It can be normal to lose weight after surgery but it shouldn't continue for very long as you start to get back to normal eating. It's a balancing act too many low fibre foods can make your output looser and liquid but too many high fibre foods can thicken up your output and possibly cause a blockage and/or stomach pains. The general advice is to start a food diary in which your record everything you eat and drink and medication then record all your output and make a comparison with previous days.

This is the one I use, from playstore

Its simple to use, you decide the information you want to enter

It is also normal to feel weak, tired and exhausted listen to your body and take a rest and have a sleep during the day as you need it.

I'm sure that everything will settle down soon and your energy levels will increase

Just give me shout if you need anymore information, always about to help

  • Hi Peacock62

i was given too much hydration during surgery and was on fluid restrictions while I was in hospital. I’ve since been told that I naturally drink too much! I’m restricted to 5-6 mugs of tea or fruit Fingers crosseda each day. My output does seem to have improved so Fingers crossed!

Wishing you lots of luck.Kissing heart

  • Always happy to share! I had 6 mugs yesterday as I’d been for a walk on the beach with my dogs! Can’t believe I’ve been as mobile this quickly. I think I’m going to have to be careful not to go overGrinningard. Upside of drinking less means no longer constantly looking for a loo!Grinning

  • Wow you seem to be doing really well did you have key hole surgery I had to have open surgery in the end as my tumor was quite big as I didn't get the shrinkage from the chemoradiation . Listen to your body though if you are tired rest . You sound like you live by the sea how lovely .I live a few streets away from the Thames in London. When I came out of hospital after the operation my stoma was working fine and I'm eating the same diet I've been on a low residue since March!! I think this last lot in hospital with having fluids & drugs pumped into me has mucked up my system. I'm going to try and stick to your 6 mug rule and see if that works

    Enjoy the seasideHeart eyes
