Hi everyone ,

my daughter had her ileostomy reversal on Tuesday . Her surgery went well but took a bit longer than expected due to a lot of adhesions . She was also kept in recovery for two and a half hours as she was quite sick and in a lot of pain .

She seems to be recovering well though still has quite a lot of pain . She’s getting quiet nauseous at times too The nurses are giving her meds which are helping .

Shes 2 days post surgery now but still hasn’t passed any wind . Is it normal to take this long ? I suppose I’m just worried that something is wrong ?

Her consultant saw her this morning and seemed happy with her progress , he said once she’d passed wind she could start eating again , hopefully then the bowels will move and she can go home .

Could anyone share their experiences with stoma reversal with me ? Is the delay in passing wind normal ?

Thanks

Hi sammolly I had the same operation as your daughter  I ended up back in hospital 2 days after I was sent home .they told ,me my bowel had stopped working the pain was horrendous immediately after the op I was in recovery about two and half hours, I didn't pass wind for ages but when I did it was really painful it's a long drawn out process I have to watch what I eat different foods still effect me in different ways it's 4 years since I had my op now and I'm more or less back to normal just tell your daughter to stick in there and she will succeed good luck

She was vomiting this evening , the nurse said it was normal until the bowel started to work but I’m worried that something is wrong . They said her temperature etc is normal so they don’t seemed concerned . I can’t help worrying though

  • Hi, it’s sounds like an Ileus. My partner had bowel surgery 2.5 weeks ago and he was fine for the first 4 days and was discharged from hospital and then within a few hours was throwing up copious amounts of brown liquid sick and in a lot of pain. Demand a CT scan. The scan will show if she has an Ileus. If so, it’s normal. Don’t panic like I did. But she needs a gastro tube in her nose, throat and into her stomach to bring up the vomit and bile.

Her bowel is asleep and will start working within a few days. I’ve literally just been through this with my husband. It’s very scary but she will be fine xx

That’s exactly how I was rushed me back in hospital I had ct scan and tube  up my nose it was very scary at the time

  • I can imagine. It was so utterly awful for me with my partner. Very scary. He went from being fine one minute to being so, so poorly the next. He was nil by mouth for 5 days. Gastro tube, catheter too as everything went to sleep. But 9 days on and he’s home and doing great x

  • Hi . I had the dreaded ileus after both my ops - it’s not nice but it is quite normal - the Bowel is a bit of a diva and doesn’t like being handled. I’ve been lucky enough not to have the gastric tube thing as it’s apparently not very nice and I’ve got better by being on nil by mouth for a couple of days, then moving on to liquids, then jelly and ice cream etc. It’s surprising how long you can manage on nil by mouth with a fluid drip and although I lost a lot of weight I’ve managed to put most of it back on over time - I even had some of those fortisip build-up drinks for a bit.

My bowels also took several days to start working and my output was totally liquid for the first few days too. Peppermint tea and chewing gum is supposed to help trapped wind or the nurses gave me some peppermint cordial.

Presumably they are checking her CRP (infection) marker as part of her daily bloods which should be heading downwards? Might be worth asking the question?

Hope she starts to improve over the next couple of days and gets back home to her nice comfy bed and her mum

    Take care

She was very sick during the night , vomiting up bile . They’ve put a tube down her nose into her stomach and have told her mil by mouth for the next 24 hours . I hope this will help her . They’re checking her bloods daily but haven’t said there’s any problem there .

  • So sorry to hear this. I was allowed to eat jelly & ice cream a few hours after the op, didn't have to wait for wind. As you know, my bowel didn't start working til day 5, but I did pass wind from day 3. I had some sickness, and did vomit on day 2 but they put that down to the morphine. When I wasn't passing anything for so long, my surgeon checked the anastomoses wasn't blocked (using his finger, not pleasant but effective!), felt my stomach and checked for distention. If she doesn't have bloating or distention it's likely that it'll just take time. I was worried too, but my surgeon said that 'faeces are like planes, they always come down eventually.' You have to eat first, of course! Keeping everything crossed things get moving soon. x

  • Hi,

Gosh some of these replies are quite scary.

If your daughter had morphine for pain relief then that can cause nausea and vomiting - as can the general anaesthetic.

The other side effect of morphine (and codeine) is that it stops the Bowel moving.

it took me 2 - 3 days to pass wind. I was advised to eat, drink and walk around to get things moving and when they did then they didn’t stop for a few hours!

Things have settled down since then but there is no such thing as normal or regular for us!

    I hope things resolve soon.

She’s still vomiting so they had to take out the tube and try get a bigger one in , they say she’s vomiting fecal matter now . Hopefully this bigger tube will help .

She still have t passed wind so they think she has a bit of a blockage which hopefully resolve itself in a day or two .. I don’t know , it’s just awful to see her like this
