After being given the all clear from rectum cancer the beginning of May this year, I was hoping to get my reversal operation soon after. Apparently, I was rather optimistic. I have been told it takes 7 months as I am not a priority? To say i was gutted is an understatement!

Does anyone know if the wait will effect my recovery? I will have had my ileostomy bag for 18 months, and Im worried the bowel will be effected.

    Hi ,

The waiting times can be a bit hit and miss for reversals. It all depends on availability of beds and the surgeon's schedule. I was lucky and had my reversal about three months after I was given the all clear after the resection operation (I did not need chemo afterwards). I was also told that it could be a long wait, but then a call at the start of October telling me that the surgery is scheduled for the next week!

So we will hope for the best, that you don't have to wait for 7 months. Others have previously suggested calling every so often to check on the status of the waiting list (colorectal nurse, surgeon's secretary? Not something I had to do so not 100% sure).

In the meantime, I will recommend that you do sphincter exercises (as recommended by ). Tighten and hold the muscles for 5-10 seconds (like holding in a poo), then tighten a bit more for another 5-10 seconds, then again a bit more. Do this as often as you can, because the sphincter would have been out of action for a while.

    Kind regards,

    Yolande
