Hi Everyone
My Dad is getting a lot of pancaking lately where is just collecting all around the stoma and he was in a bit of pain with it yesterday, just wondering has anyone experienced this and if so do you have any tips to stop it? Thank you and hope everyone is doing ok. Danni x
Thanks Ian
My Dad does use the convex bags but yeah it’s a colostomy so he doesn’t use the drainable bags but yeah I will tell him about blowing in to them first. Thanks
Hi Danni,
I just find drainable more convenient as I don't have to change them several times a day and easier to get rid of gas.
Yes I usually shower without the colostomy bag but always keep the urostomy bag on whilst showering as I am petrified of getting a UTI. I don't have any problems with the bags I use ( Holister) so long as I properly dry the area around the stoma with medical dry wipes. The Holister bags have an extra waterproof seal around the edges which helps them stay on really firmly. I really struggled with the previous Salts bags as they did not have the extra seal around the outside edges.
Glad to hear your dad is doing well.

Hi Guitarman
Thanks for your reply. Ahh so you keep your urosomy bag on while showering. I didn’t know that taking it off may cause an infection.. don’t want them my Dad has had a few of them since his op and they aren’t nice so thanks for that info.
I think my Dad might have a sample of the holister bag but don’t think it’s the drainable one. Shame they don’t all come with the extra seal around edges. Thanks again.

I am another advocate for drainable bags for colostomates. I prefer emptying to changing especially when out. Also much easier as I have a lot of wind sometimes. However I realise everyone is very different and has to find what is best for them.
Pancaking is a problem for me and I can not find a solution that works 100%. Hope you have better luck.
Hi Astlnd
yes pancaking is a right pain and yes maybe I will have to get my Dad to try to drainable bags but he just likes the thought of a fresh bag on every time. Hope you find a solution for pancaking also.
I'm sorry that you are also experiencing pancaking and further to my original response to with information on pancaking which is a real pain to colostomates, I am sure that you know about these products but there might be no harm in listing them again if not for you but for Danni to help her dad and I am sure other members who could be suffering in silence.
When using a lubricating gel which should be inserted into the top of pouch CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED to ensure that none of the gel comes in contact with the adhesive on the flange otherwise you may have adhesion problems.
After applying the gel into the top of the pouch you should gently spread the gel downwards to lubricate the insides all the way down

Brava® Lubricating Deodorant
Multi-lubricating effect
Odour from output or output gathering around the stoma is a challenge for many ostomates.
Specifically designed to be used inside the bag, Brava Lubricating Deodorant helps to mask odour when changing or emptying the stoma bag, whilst the lubricating effect makes it easier for output to go to the bottom of the bag.
This can help reduce pancaking of the stoma bag. The Brava Lubricating Deodorant is available in bottle or sachet form.

2 Part pouches could be an alternative to 1 part as you don't have to remove the wafer each time you have to change the bag
Another way to go if suffering from pancaking is to try out pouches from different manufacturers as this make a difference to pancaking, either speak to your stoma nurse, your supplier or ask all pouch manufacturers for samples. Quite happy to send over a list and links to manufacturers if required.
This is an American product which is used with 2 part closed pouches
This maybe of interest but as far as I can see they are not on GP prescription and I can only find them on sale on Ebay
Colo-Majic Liners® are patented and offer unique design features making them easy to use with any of the major ostomy product manufacturers’ two piece ostomy systems.
Some of the major benefits of using Colo-Majic Liners® include:
The liners are flushable.
Colo-Majic Liners® are flushable. When you’re ready to empty your pouch, you simply remove the liner, deposit it into a toilet and flush it away. There is no messy clean-up, no water is needed and the time taken to accomplish the change is very quick. Once the used liner is disposed of, you simply insert a new liner into the same pouch and reapply it to the flange. Please note: like many personal hygiene products, Colo-Majic Liners® should not be flushed in septic systems.
Colo-Majic Liners® come in two sizes just right for you.
Most ostomy product manufacturers offer multiple ring sizes for their ostomy products. Different people with different sized stomas need different size flange ring seals. Because of the unique flexible nature of our liners, we’re able to make two sizes available for use with the various manufacturers’ offerings:
The unique patented design of the Colo-Majic Liners® allow users to poke air holes, if necessary, into the shoulders of the liners to expel gas. When used with a filtered pouch, Colo-Majic Liners® are very effective in controlling gas and the sometimes noticeable bulging that many ostomy patients deal with.
I hope that this is of interest to you all, as it appears to be a problem that many are living with we should start a wide reaching discussion and attempt to find solutions that would help all.
Can we all keep in touch on this and have your say on pancaking.
If replying to this it would be helpful to know
If Colostomate or Ileostomate.
One or 2 part system
Closed or drainable
Any other information that would be helpful to the discussion.
Always here to advise and help
