Hi Kath
Thanks for sharing this-I didn’t see it myself, but agree that it’s really good for people to see how straightforward it is, and help with de-mystifying the process!

I’ll have a look Kath!

Hi Kath,
Thanks for highlighting this - I’ve just had a look on YouTube. Really pleased to see this young man taking the opportunity to do this on live tv to help raise awareness. Not sure I would have been brave enough!
I’ve found the clip and watched it, Kath. I know this guy is famous on social media for talking about his stoma etc so all credit to him for that.
The only thing that irritated me was twice I heard the phrase “fitted with a stoma bag”. Aargh!!!
No one is fitted with a stoma bag like having an exhaust pipe fitted on to a car. I do wish people would talk about a stoma being formed, which is the actual reality of it.
After all, as he did explain, this is part of your own anatomy, made from your intestine. But he did show just how simple it is to change a bag so I’m sure a lot of people will have learned something from watching the segment.

Ooh, it always rankles with me, Kath! I try to encourage people facing stoma surgery to think of it as part of themselves, not an alien thing that’s fitted on in some way. Disappointed the doctor didn’t point it out too.

Completely agree about some of the language used - it’s part of you that forms your stoma! And being really critical I wish it had been a less clean and simple bag change. I appreciate that for TV it was appropriate but it’s not always like that … and it didn’t demonstrate why someone might need to use the disabled toilet for it. Still good to see it reach a wider audience.
