Hi

Anyone got advice about shaving around a stoma. I’ve used disposible razors and been told to do it dry and not use soap but find it unsatisfactory. I’m tempted to get small electric razor but not sure how well it would work, opinions very welcome

  • Hi

As a woman, I don’t personally need to shave around my stomas but if I did, I would use a small electric razor such as the ones women use for bikini line shaving. A small shaver would be easier to use, and hopefullly avoid making any cuts as can happen during manual shaving.

Hopefully some of our males in the group will be able to share some of their practical experiences, but I cannot remember ever reading that there are any issues using an electric shaver.

  • thanks Sarah, thats a good shout

  • I cut the top off of an empty 1 litre soda water plastic bottle at a point on the taper that was a little larger than my stoma. The screw top is a convenient handle. Hold it with gentle pressure to guard the stoma and shave a wide area with a good quality disposable razor incorporating a lubricant strip and using plain cold water. The transparent plastic allows the stoma to be seen. Rinse off when complete and keep it in your stoma supply bag. I have had mine for over four years and it's as good as new. No cuts at all!

  • I use a small amount of shaving foam  - not on the actual spout of course !  and a normal (Gillette Mach3 ) razor.  Normal care around the spout but otherwise seems fairly straightforward.
