Stumbled upon this support community and am pleased to be a new member, thanks. I had my urostomy op nearly 3 weeks ago and am interested in any recommendations anyone has for stoma support/hernia belts that are not cumbersome. I was an active person, running, hiking, diy etc and intend to be again when I'm fully well again. So, I wish to support the area around the stoma at these times to try to stop getting a hernia. Any advice on products/reviews would be most welcome folks

    Hi

    Welcome to the community sboots.

I’m an ileostomy patient and was referred to suportx by my stoma nurse a few weeks after leaving hospital. They sent out someone to measure me properly for an abdominal support belt, courtesy of the NHS. They do many types of products including different types of belts, shorts and briefs.  I’ve had both a tube belt and adjustable peel belt. Both have been great and helped support my abdomen during exercise, including when swimming.

I would advise you to call your stoma nurse and ask them to refer you to whomever it is they use in your area but I would recommend suportx and they will bring products for you to try which was great when deciding what would suit my lifestyle and needs best.

Hope this is helpful to you.

    Best wishes

Hi and welcome to the online community and although I am very sorry to see you here I'm so glad that you stumbled upon us and reached out to us.

It's really good to hear that you're getting on so well after your Urostomy and ready to get back to life before stoma. There should no reason for you not start running, hiking and DIY very soon but can I stress that you don't rush to do much too soon, speak with your stoma nurse and ask for guidelines on how soon you can start the strenuous activities but I would think you've still a few weeks off getting started.

However your question was on support belts and avoiding getting a hernia.

There are a number of company who supply stoma support clothing and belts which can be obtained by prescription. SuportX, Comfizz and CUI all supply a very good range of belts and underwear and you could have a look at them I can supply you links to them if you wish.

You have a personal annual allocation for garments make sure you get your full one.

Another company that you should look at is

Sash Stoma Support Belts this company was founded by an ostomate and most of the staff have some type of ostomy. Most of their support belts, hernia belts and shields are all made to an individuals measurements and can I suggest that you a look at their web pages (see Green Text above) and see if you can find one that might suit you. Don't be put of by the costs shown as they are supplied to a NHS prescription. They only take orders from stoma users and not supply companies or stoma nurses.

I thought that this might be of interest to you

SPORT AND FITNESS AFTER STOMA SURGERY

I hope this information is of help and of interest to you but please if you need any further information regarding being an Urostomist just give me a shout and I'll do what I can try and help. If you need advice on products you are using again give a shout and I try and help resolve any problem quickly for you. When you have a question to ask always remember that there is no such thing as a small question or a silly question if you've got one rolling around in your head ask it and lets get the answer you need and you getting on with important thing of Living with a stoma.

Look forward to hearing how you get on and please let us know soon you've started running and hiking leave the DIY for another day do the important things in life.

Thanks Ian for the great Info. Yes I've seen the SASH one and so far it is top of my interest list. Considering it's been around for many years I would have thought there may be some online reviews but it appears not. I hope that does not imply a negative on that one. I will keep looking until I decide thanks

Hello shoots. I'm new here too and have always been active with dogs, horses, yoga, swimming and the gym.

My stoma nurses said wait till 3 months post surgery before doing anything more than pelvic tilts, supine twist and bridge (hips off the floor whilst lying on your back with feet on the floor). They did say that at my 3 month check they'd measure me for support belt. In fact they've referred me to someone a third party and I've had to wait an extra 2 weeks for an appointment tomorrow. So it will 4 months by the time I get my support.

Hope you get back to activity soon.

Thanks Riversidedawn for that I'm seeing my stoma nurses in 2 days. Yeh I won't be doing anything until I'm told to as I want to do everything I can to avoid a hernia espescially as I'm an active person like yourself. Good luck with the support as well, hope it works ok for you.

I've been looking at different ones online and the one I am drawn to is the SASH Hernia belt & protective cover. I would be interested if anyone has any experience with these. Thanks

Thanks Cassie78, I've been referred to SupportX too and so far seem professional. Measured me first then let me try on various samples. Seems straight forward, they send prescription request to GP authorise within 2 weeks, the  another 2 weeks as they make to measure.

My only negative is really aimed at my stona nurses who know I've been itching to get back in the saddle. 12 weeks they said, at 12 weeks you get your support appliances. Sounded good to me, so had my 12 week check to be told they refer me to supportx who tell me it could take a further 4 weeks before they arrive.

    .    .

    Morning ladies

Just thought I'd throw this company into the mix knowing how you all like nice practical things for day and night wear (gents can look as well!)

Vanilla Blush - NHS prescription items

You should note that your allowance is 6 garments per annum but I've not been able to establish if it is 6 of each item you use or 6 as a mix and max. They are all covered under NICE guidelines BUT the "word" is guidelines and your GP has the authority to excess the number 6, always worth asking if you need more.

When you get your first garment for trial as soon as you think it's the one for you reorder immediately

A lot of the waiting time for the garments to arrive is down to how long your GP takes to issue a prescription and send it to the supply company. If you can get the prescription sent direct to the manufacturer who usually despatch quicker.

Remember ALWAYS claim your full annual allowance, they do lose their support with constant washing.

Bit of trivia for you all NHS hernia repair approx £4000/5000 now look at the garments you would like per year and say your annual allowance was approx £200  it's a big saving over the op as apposed to 20+years of supplying garments.

I've looked and researched support garments in depth and I am always here to give that little extra bit of "SUPPORT' anytime you need it.

    .   . . et all

    Hi I'm back.

If you're looking for something special for outings or the holiday I thought you might be interested in this company

    The White Rose Collection

They also have a range of clothing to stop your bag being cut in half and causing pancaking.

    Unfortunately not prescription items.

And not forgetting the gents there is a section on the website aimed at us males.

There used to be another company OSTOMY SECRETS but for some reason the web site directs you to Convatec as they are no longer supplying.
