Poo coming from bottom after colostomy

Lovely subject, sorry! I've a temporary colostomy which was done last May. The other week I had a strong feeling that I needed to poo. I went to the loo and actual poo came out of my bum, not mucus which I know is normal. I'm not panicking about it but does anyone know if this is normal?

I have also been having all sorts of problems with loose output, stomach pain and bloating which the consultant said was due to too much fibre in my diet. I've cut out fruit and some veg but it's not made much difference.

I had radiotherapy and chemo and I know my bowel is much more fragile than before treatment. I'm hoping some of you lovely people can advise me on these issues.

Thanks

It’s normal for a  sensation of needing to go for a number 2 , if you should have poo coming from there is probably not right , best check with SN . As for stomach pain , bloating and Diarrhoea this is all normal also , bloating is the biggest pain ever literally and you wish you could fart for ten mins. But no it will balloon @3am and then leak. Better in a bag than in a box so they say.

I know these are not great things to talk about but when I first had my stoma I constantly felt like I needed to use the toilet and at times I did go a little bit my nurses said this was normal also I had to have a special enema X-ray to check the area was healing so I could have my reversal and even tho it was 10minths after my operation I couldn’t keep of the toilet so I think it’s normal but do speak to your nurses if you are still worried

    Hi Findom

I can only talk about temporary loop ileostomy where the sensation to empty your bowels is entirely normal due to peristalsis, the natural wave effect which forces food through your body.

Certainly it is possible for you to still pass some poo with a loop ileostomy, not sure that's the case with a colostomy. Give your stoma nurse a call. I recently had my water soluble enema test to check the resection of my bowel and that produced a surprising amount of poo!

Conversations you never thought you'd have on a forum, lol!

Sorry to hear about your problem my advice to you would be to phone

NHS111 this evening and speak to them about the lack of output and the feeling your stomach is big.

The output from you bottom what does it look like and does it have a foul smell. Are you in any pain.

  • Hi,

I had a temporary colostomy last year (it is now permanent following my cancer operation). Yes mainly mucus used to pass but I did get the occasional small stool pass through.

I guess you should be concerned though if the loop colostomy stoma stops working. It is a loop so there will be chance that some will pass through. Most though should pass through the stoma into your colostomy bag.

    Best regards

    GM

I pick up my guitar and play, just like yesterday
Then I get on my knees and pray I don't get cancer again.
