Hello, I had rectal cancer and had my surgery in March. I have a temporary ilestomy that should be reversed next month.

I believe my ilestomy is causing me to be nauseous all day every day and i also vomit every morning.

I have been back to the hospital and they kept me in and ran numerous tests but couldn't find anything wrong.

I was wandering if anyone else has experienced this?

    Hi

Sorry to hear of your problems.

How is your output is in regular?

I take it that you are keeping well hydrated and avoiding drinking whilst eating.

I assume that you are having small meals eaten slowly often.

Did they check your B12 levels to make sure you haven't got B12 anaemia.

A quick word with your stoma care nurse might be useful.

Sorry can't offer any other comments as I have never suffered this problem.

Hope it clears up and the reversal is a success.

Thanks for replying Ian. Yes I'm doing the above. But I think I might need my B12 levels checked. I'm seeing my stoma nurse on Tuesday so will have a word with her about it too.

Hello! I realize this is a very old post, but I'm hoping you can provide a follow up on how you're doing! I have a friend I'm looking after that is experiencing nausea and vomiting daily since her ileostomy. She is also a pancreatic cancer survivor.

I look forward to your reply!

I am afraid that I can't give you a follow up to the original poster as we've not had any feed back all I can do ask you some questions about your friend.

    Is

She is nauseous and vomiting but is she experiencing any other symptoms

    Is she passing wind

Is she passing any output into her bag

    Does she have cramps

If she is passing output what does it look like

How long has this being going on.

It is possible but not certain that your friend may have a slight blockage and she should

    • avoid solid foods for the time being
    • drinking plenty of fluids
    • massage her tummy and the area around your stoma
    • lying on her back, pulling her knees up to her chest and rolling from side to side for a few minutes
    • taking a hot bath for 15 to 20 minutes to help relax the muscles in her tummy.

If the stoma is not active for more than 6 hours and she experience cramps or nausea, she may have an obstruction.

If you think you may have an obstruction, contact your GP or stoma nurse for advice or this being the weekend the number to call NHS111.

I am not suggesting that it is a blockage just quoting worst case scenario.

Thank you so much for your reply.

The pain she's experiencing is mainly in her lower back on the sides. She says it feels like her kidneys, but her kidneys are fine. Everything else appears to normal. Her output is usually watery with a few solids mixed in. The main concern is nausea and having to vomit to try to relieve it. She literally forces it up for relief. It's like there is constant partial blockage. And she dehydrates every day, because drinking worsens the nausea. She has been to the hospital 2 times in the past month alone, and it's looking like another trip tomorrow for another IV for hydration.

Any advice you have, or if you know of anyone else going through this, that would be great. Thank you again!
