Surviving Oesophageal Cancer

Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.

I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.

Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.

All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.

I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.

All the best

Crystal

    Thanks Steve,

Best wishes greatly appreciated. Would love to splice the mainbrace but new doseage of  hillbilly heroin (thats the yank name for oxycontin) already takes me to unknown territory without any enhancement!!!    Wouldn't even manage to climb on a row boat with it tied up alongside.

Festivities commence in 16 hours time and then it's time to start planning for the 80th!!

    Cheers, Ben.

    Hi Janet

It just goes to show how your dad’s determination and your support can make such a difference, get these annoying infections kicked into touch and time will now do the rest.

Have you had a look a Crystal’s group forum as it’s very good with many topics under discussion?

Give my best to your dad and take the very best of care,

    Steve

Hi everyone, thought I would bump this up a bit as Crystals discussions are so good this site seems to be getting overlooked!!!!!!!

Hi ben, how are you? Are the birthday celebrations still in full swing? Hope you have had a fantastic time. I love to see generations of a family gathered together,  you must be so proud. Good luck with treatment, let us know how you get on.

Hi steve, hope you have had a good weekend, think you got the best of the weather!

Ed has had an ok weekend considering. He has had some liquidised soup and we seem to be in control of the pain. he has relaxed more at home so we just wait for oncology and to hear from a mac nurse, not got one yet!

It seems so rotten to have to start again but many of you already feel like that so we have to get on with it, I thank goodness I have you all to help, thankyou a million times in advance as I know I will be on here alot! but i try to keep my sense of humour or I would cause a flood with tears.

To everyone out there, all my love and best wishes for a happy day, love leisha

  • Hi Janet, it’s always a good sign if your dad is putting on weight and once he’s got control over that infection he should make good progress.  I know some people have a persistent cough during recovery and I think your dad’s continued infection must be a similar thing.  I hope he improves very soon, but with his weight gain he will become stronger, which in turn will enable him to overcome infections.  Take care Janet, it’s good to hear from you. Xx

Hi Ben, are you still celebrating or now recovering from the party? Sometimes, when a good party starts, it’s hard to stop isn’t it. Ah, those were the days Lol. I hope you had the most wonderful time with your family and friends, with maybe a surprise thrown in for good measure.  And you must tell us about meeting your great grandson for the first time.  How lovely that must have been for you and Sharon.  Did all the candles fit on your cake?  Have you got photos you can share with us?  Anyway Ben, most of all, I hope that day to day, you are comfortable and pain-free so that you can enjoy the coming summer and glorious outdoors.  In a previous post you said you were having another CT scan so I wondered when that was.  Please keep us up to date and hope to hear from you soon. xx

Hi Leisha, thanks for your kind words and for thinking to bump up this thread. I’ve been meaning to post here but time escapes sometimes.  I’ll catch up with you later somewhere out there…Lol.

Hi Steve, I hope all is well with you as I know from last time you said you’d discovered new-found energy, which is brilliant.  I too have found huge reserves of energy lately, but just as suddenly, it plummets, only to return again just when I need it.  It’s probably called adrenalin Lol.  Keep in touch. Xx

Hi Netty, I was wondering about you too the other day.  I hope all is well with your dad. Xx

To All looking in, I hope your day is as good as it can be. xx

Hi all, a bit of a grey day here, oh to be in New Zealand eh with summer ahead.

We see oncologist on friday at 7.30, a bit late but at least we wont be waiting another weekend. Ed is in alot of pain but stubbornly wont increase the pain control although we were told we could. I seem to have switched off or turned into a robot as I  dont seem to react to anything but get daily stuff done. he makes his choices and I feel it is his right to do so. Sorry that sounds negative but i dont know what else I can do.

I am trying to get discussions going on pancreatic group site but no response yet. They are just not with it like you gorgeous lot on here. This is my favourite thread and I will always be on here. OH no, I hear you all moan.See I feel better already at the thought of tormenting you all, lol.

Have a good day, speak to you soon, leisha
