Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.
I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.
Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.
All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.
I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.
All the best
Crystal
Hi Crystal,and Leisha,
Yep the party is over, all went very well and I was totally spoilt and overwhelmed. Had a serious problem with my bladder rushing to my eyes when I attempted a thank you speech but felt better when I noticed all three of my daughters and Sharon were stricken with the same ailment. Big surprise was the DVD which my no.3 daughter had spent many hours preparing with a 70 year run down on yours truly and crew from photos and videos from the archives. Wonderful -- something future generations can look back on and wonder what happened to the world!!. I also had to have a short zzzzzz during proceedings, there was a room with a sofa in an alcove and they settled me down alongside my 11mth old great grandson -- priceless! It was great to see him for first time and he is the mirror image of his dad (my no.4 grandson Ben). We had a heap of pics taken by pro photographer and hope to post some at a future date.
Now have appointment confirmed for ct scan on 8/10 and see radiologist for first consultation on 15/10, so marching along under semi urgent rating. Still working on the pain control but keep having breakthrough episodes which put cosiderable strain on the sense of humour. Usually happens at night and I end up spending rest of the night in the lazy boy to avoid burbling incoherently and keeping Sharon awake - hence this post at 3,08am. But other than that life is wonderful and we are in a very good space in our little piece of Portobello paradise. Time for zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz land folks - take care out there.
Cheers Ben.

I had not forgotten your 50th Birthday, as all the important dates are in my calendar here, so I’ve just dropped by to wish you a Very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns of the Day. Now, the thing is, can you muster enough breath to blow out 50 candles without getting light-headed and falling over?
And may the year ahead be another Good Year, only better. xx

Hi Steve,
Congratulations!!! 50 years young. Well done young fella. What is the next target? How does Crystal manage to produce those magnificent cakes?
As a matter of interest it is also my Dad's birthday today - he would have been 90 but left us at 78. He was only 19yrs and 361 days older than me and his name was Ben.
Trust the day was all you had hoped for and I wish you many, many more .
Cheers Ben.
Hi Crystal, Janet and Ben
Thank you all for your best wishes, I am at work at the moment so Crystal’s cake pictures will have to wait until I get home as they won’t display on my work machine.
What more could I ask for on my birthday than to have met such good friends, if one year ago someone would have said to me that I would be feeling this good on my 50th I would not have believed them, so the way I am feeling today is the best present I could possibly have wished for.
To everyone looking in, may the day bestow to you the best of all it can offer?
Steve
