Surviving Oesophageal Cancer

Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.

I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.

Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.

All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.

I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.

All the best

Crystal

Thank you Crystal.  Am not sure what you mean by posting it in the group as I'm not terribly good at using the site?

You are so special I knew you'd be there for the good news but more importantly I know you are always there to scoop people up when the news isn't so good, as are our other friends.

    Love to you and all

That's magnificent news, wonderful wonderful!  I am so happy for you both - that must be something to celebrate this weekend and a great way to finish what sounds like a lovely holiday too.  You have made my weekend - that's even better news than Man United winning tonight...  So encouraging for all of us.

I shall raise a glass for you tonight.

    Love, hugs & cheers

  • Hi Sue

A very brief navigation lesson, as I’m sure you’re still too excited to concentrate much Lol.  This thread is on the main Forum, so whilst you’re reading this if you look to the left on the green menu where it says What’s New, Forums, Blogs, People, Chat, Groups etc, well this is posted on the Forums.  To access our Gullet Group, you can either:

click on Groups and then scroll down, where you’ll see pages of all the different types of cancer groups.

    Or:

further down on the left is Cancer Types where you can click on Gullet (Oesophagus) Cancer and that will bring you to our group showing the lists of threads we have there.  I’ll stop here because now it gets confusing, if it isn’t already Lol.

    Have a lovely day today.

Love and Hugs to all reading.

    Crystal xx

    Sue & Crystal

Ho hum...  Well not the result we wanted but let's look to next year. On & up!  Some wonderful football all the same and I did raise a glass to you and Dieter.

Don't yet know when we're heading back - I have an assessment with company doctors on the 6th which I hope & believe will go well, and I'll know some time after that.

Hugs & muted cheers (only for today...)

    Charles
