How to support my mum with her breast cancer diagnosis

Hi everyone,

My mum (52f) was just diagnosed with grade 3 right breast invasive ductal carcinoma and right axilla metastatic carcinoma. It is hormone receptor positive and HER2 negative.

She sees the oncologist for the first time on Tuesday and I am going with her. At the moment we don’t know if it’s going to be oral or intravenous but will find all this out then.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for going through chemo for her. I have packed her a little bag with fluffy socks, a blanket, slippers, a little pack with lip balm and hand cream, a 1L water bottle. I got her a kindle so she can read.

Am I missing anything? I know it might be a bit over the top but I worry so much about not being organised for this sort of thing.

  • I’m really sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis. I’m in a similar position but for a different type of cancer and thinking about how I may be able to support her during chemotherapy, if that’s part of her treatment (it seems highly likely)

If you think she’ll like it, you could also add things like puzzle books or adult colouring books. I’ve found colouring very helpful as a mindfulness tactic while managing the stress of the diagnosis so I’m considering adding that to her care bag in case she may also find it useful. I’ve heard of things like healthy snacks, mints and lemon drops too (although sometimes they can cause digestive upset).

Wishing you and your mum all the best. I know how tough it can all be xx
