Frustrating wait for treatment

Hi

Kind of just needing somewhere to vent my frustrations to be honest. My Dad (80) has stage 3 T1 bladder cancer (high risk NMIBC) and cancer on one of his kidneys.

His first biopsy in February managed to remove tumour from his bladder. His initial diagnosis was 5th March. We had the further diagnosis of stage 3 etc, just under 2 weeks ago.

Back on 5th March he was told he needed surgery on his kidney and he would be starting a course of chemo injections. During the more recent diagnosis they said they want to operate again as soon as possible to check for any further tumours on his bladder as a matter of urgency.

He had a pre-op in the middle of March and has had nothing done since. Last week he got sent an appointment for another pre-op (the hospital now say this is a mistake and not needed). He is also apparently pencilled in for surgery at the very end of April.

I think he and the rest of the family are just very frustrated with the wait. He got very confused and upset with the mistaken appointment. I know the NHS are doing their best and I'm certain we're not the only ones in the same situation - just feels like an agonising wait.

Sending love to all out there.

  • Hi

Waiting can be really hard especially when we hear the message about starting treatment sooner is better - it is perhaps worth noting though that part of that is getting people to go to the GP in the first place.

Totally get the issue with waiting for surgery, sometimes of course there are issues where the hospitals get a number of emergency admissions and perhaps the only thing we can hope is that being put back is because our situation is less urgent - fingers crossed. With my wife she has been an emergency in the past.

  • Thanks Steve.

Yes, it's just confusing when in meetings with his consultant they use words such as 'high risk', 'urgent' and then we just wait and wait.

  • By way of an update - he was told he did need to attend a second pre-op appointment yesterday, despite not having any treatment since the last one. When he got there the nurses couldn’t understand why he was there, they weighed him, checked his height and sent him home. Just beyond frustrating
