Hi I’m new here. My stepdad has been diagnosed with Carcinoma on tongue. I’m not really sure of where exactly it is but I’m just extremely worried he went for a check in the dentist they referred hito the dental hospital and they did a biopsy which confirmed the cancer he now has been referred to a hospital that specialises in this cancer, They have said they will have to do surgery on the areand he has a mri today and a meeting on Friday and then a PET scan in a few weeks. Is this all normal? Why do they need to do a mri and a Pet scan I don’t understand, I haven’t had the chance to talto any doctors yet but I’m also too scared to speak to them as I feel like I’m just not sure if I want to hear it all

  • Hi

Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.

There is quite a lot of information on tongue cancer on the main site here and that does confirm that MRI and PET-CT are fairly common tests given the diagnosis. With this extra information the doctors should be able to work out the best treatment options - there are a number of options.

Hope the MRI went ok, my wife finds them quite difficult where the PET-CT she is more comfortable with.

Do post on here whenever and I hope you find the information you need.

    <<hugs>>
