Hi
My mum has surgery on esophageal cancer last month and has since really stuggled to eat anything substantial (1 egg and half a cupasoup yesterday). The meal replacement drinks she was given are all too sweet so she won't touch those, does anyone have any tips foods she could try that are nutritionally dense? Or even specific brands of shakes that aren't all sweet?
Thanks
Good Afternoon
Have you tried blending the food’s that your mum likes, if it is still to thick you can add gravy to thin it further, Thats what I do,i have problems with swallowing.
You could also ask the dietitian that prescribed the meal replacement drinks for ones that are not sweet.
Take Care
Thanks for the reply. Yeah she's spoken to the dietician and they weren't able to help that much, she keeps getting sent samples of new brands but the flavours are all sweet!
I'll try blending too, thanks!
Hi, my partner is about to have 7 weeks radiotherapy for neck and throat cancer and having peg feeding tube fit tomorrow. He too dislikes all the sweet smoothies etc I know it's not for everyone but I'm starting to make what my family call "Xmas dinner soup' for my partner and it is full of good nutrients etc. Basically make a roast chicken full dinner (veg, stuffing etc) strip it down, make proper stock from the carcass and use the stock to make a gravy then add in the cooked veg, softer parts of stuffing and blend it well (don't use too much mashed potato - makes it too starchy). It's really tasty, good nutritionally and savoury. Beats tinned soups every time in our opinion.
We've also been given some Huel savoury pots (posh, nutritionally balanced version of pot noodles) which partner has just started using and he says they're okay and could be blended more if needed.
Finally, if she likes coffee, just picked up a coffee flavoured dense nutrition drink from Holland & Barrett yesterday (£3) to try - only seen the sweet ones before. Coffee coloured container - will post name shortly.
These are just my thoughts but I'm sure there will be other ideas and I'll be grateful for any other ideas too
Hope your Mum starts to turn a positive corner soon.
