Hi All,

This is my first time posting and I am not sure if I am in the right place. My mum has been diagnosed with Extensive SCLC, total shock as she had scans in November and we were told they were clear. Her voice became quite hoarse at beginning of December and she was referred to ENT where they did a CT scan which showed Left Vocal Cord Paralysis and a Small Mass in her left lung. We were advised that a lung biopsy would be taken, then that was changed to a Liver biopsy, again another shock as we were not even aware there was any other masses apart from in the left lung.

Liver biopsy was taken and the results come back it was Metastasis SCLC. We were advised without treatment my mum’s life expectancy is 2-3 months and with treatment it is 7-9 months. Mum starts Chemotherapy tomorrow.

Absolutely Devastated, Not sure what to expect.

  • Hi

You are certainly welcome to post here, Macmillan do a great job of supporting not only the people with cancer but with this group their friends and family too. My experience of cancer is with my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma and while her's is now mostly in her lungs it is still a different type of cancer.

Janice never wanted a prognosis and I struggled with that. Perhaps it did not help when the consultant said our only treatment option was chemotherapy and that was often now very effective against sarcoma - still in her case we were lucky and the second round chemo seems to have put things to sleep - and that has been over 10 years now.

Something I find quite helpful is Your feelings when someone has cancer as being able to recognize these emotions and accept them as normal and valid can help make them a bit less overwhelming.

    <<hugs>>
