Hi I’m on here looking for support , my dad had an endoscopy on Monday as he’s not eaten in over 3 weeks he’s lost 2 stone in weight and the results of the endoscopy showed a “sinister mass” that looks malignant and is bleeding ! We was told cancer ! He’s had 9 biopsy’s then spent 3 nights in hospital to get fluids in him , he then got discharged on Friday and has spend the last 2 nights with me , how ever I’m back at work on Monday I’m so scared to leave him he lives alone and is venerable , he’s been prescribed liquid food but is still being sick on having them he’s so weak and seems to be deteriorating each day it’s breaking my heart to see I’m so worried I don’t know what to do ? We are awaiting a MDT meeting next week but surely he can’t be left like this ? I’m so scared I don’t know what to do any help is welcome , would be be able to get carers while I’m at work?

  • Hi Dani

I really am sorry that your Dad has this diagnosis and is struggling, and that you are overwhelmed with worry and fear, it is an extremely difficult time and you are right, if you dad is still not eating, in my opinion, he should not have been discharged from hospital.

    My suggestions are,

    1. Call NHS 111 ask for help

    2. Call Macmillan - the number is in my signature, they may be able to give better advice.

If your Dad is deteriorating, then 111 should send out a GP or LAS to assess him, without the correct amount of fluids or food all weekend, he will obviously deteriorate quicker, so please call either 111 or 999 depending on how much further he has deteriorated now.

I hope you both get the support you need.

  • HI, so very sorry to hear your going through this. Your story sounds very similar to my dad’s. He was on a liquid diet as couldn’t swallow, he then couldn’t keep that down for 10 days, lost a stone in a week, he had a general meeting with his oncologist who admitted him and now he’s been on feeding tube for two weeks and slowly gaining weight. I’d ring the nursing team and I’m presuming they’ll admit him to the ward. This is so upsetting, I totally understand you. I wish you all the luck xxx

  • Thank you for your response it’s the not knowing that’s the hardest bit and watching him deteriorate under my care , I feel like I’m doing everything wrong , I took him back to a&e last night they checked all his obs and he seemed “ok” so they sent him home , he’s sleeping constantly and while I’m at work I can’t wake him for his shakes it’s heartbreaking I’m a single parent that can’t keep taking time off but at the same time I’m all my dad has it’s so hard ! Xx
