My mum has bile duct cancer, prognosis 12 months. Unsure why she is starting chemo. Confused with it all

  • Hi

Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both helpful and supportive.

Looking at the main site page on bile duct cancer I note:-

If it is not possible to cure the cancer, you can have treatment to control the growth and help with symptoms. This may be with chemotherapy and sometimes radiotherapy.

Your cancer doctor or nurse will talk to you about your treatment options:

A prognosis can be helpful in some circumstances but can only be a guess based on averages and was that with our without treatment?

Do post on here whenever and remember to you can also post in Bile duct cancer forum

    <<hugs>>

  • Hi there

so sorry to hear about your mum.
my husband was also diagnosed with stage 4 Bile duct cancer in October and is on chemo. I think it’s called palliative chemo at this stage because it’s about controlling the cancer and stopping it from progressing.

my husband has also been given 12-18 months which was a total shock  he’s only 51 and we have two young girls. But from what I can tell from other forums, this prognosis is the standard line so try not to think about it too much because everyone is different.

as your mum started the chemo?

  • Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your mum, my dad has also been diagnosed with bile duct. He hasn’t been given a timeline though and we feel equally in the dark, he’s been offered ‘pallitative’ chemo, but as others have said, those timelines are just an average so you never know. My dad was diagnosed 7 months ago and he’s still fighting fit
