Mum was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the inside of her mouth. She was undergoing tests to determine the extent when she had a fall. She went to hospital for a scan as she had a huge bruise on her head. She went in to be checked over, a week later had a severe UTI, was dehydrated and suffering delirium.
she now distrusts everybody including family and believes she is being targeted. She now refuses to accept she has cancers and thinks all medical staff are lying.
Her cancer in her mouth is becoming painful. Our MacMillan nurse is seeing what she can do but without mum co-operating it is hard. She is home with dad who has dementia which is getting worse as her behaviour confuses him. She says voices tell her to stay in bed and she wants to die.
we have carers twice a day but she won’t work with them easily. My sister and I are doing what we can but we both gave health and family issues too and work.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and if you were able to get the person affected to accept the diagnosis and help, even if just pain relief as we know she is too frail to undergo chemo or radiotherapy.
Any advice appreciated. X
Hi Dee48 welcome to the forum. Gosh that sounds super stressful for you all..I'm.reading and rereading your post and can't help wondering if your mum.is still suffering from delirium given her behaviour. I would speak to her GP as a matter of urgency or get the Carers to raise the confusion with their Managers as a matter of urgency..
Hi, yes she does still have delirium. Not as bad as at first but it’s there to a degree that affects her. We talked about anti depressants but she doesn’t want to take her current medication so that’s not really an option. My MacMillan nurse is trying to see if she can get someone out to see what we can do for pain relief but the only avenue for the delirium is to have her sectioned. She is 89, dads 91 so we really don’t want to go down that route unless she becomes a danger to dad or herself.
