My Mom, 83 years age had ESD in August to remove stomach cancer. Stage 1b.

Doctor said he managed to remove all but unfortunately, after surgery CT, Doctor discovered that cancer has spread in the stomach (luckily staying in the stomach and not spread to lymph). avoid further spread to next stage, he is suggesting to remove her 2/3 of stomach. (keyhole)

Dr explained procedure and what to expect after op. He then said she will expect to lose weight upto 10kg and it will be slow to gain the weight back.

Mom also had discussion with GP and other specialist to get second opinion and both said she should take keyhole op.

I also want her to take keyhole but at same time, I am so anxious for weight loss as she only weigh 38kg. But Dr said she is fit enough to cope surgery and doing keyhole is only way to remove cancer.

I am living distance to mom and won't be able to support as much as I want to.

I wonder whats the life after losing 2/3 stomach and recover process will be...Will she be mobile enough?

What and how I can support her?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

It's natural to have all sorts of questions about your mom's possible treatment so I thought I'd pop on and suggest that you also join and post in the stomach cancer group. You'll then connect directly with others who have either had the same treatment as that which is being proposed for your mom, or who have a friend or family member who has had it.

If you'd like to join that group just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your mom's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
