Hello all, I hope this is ok to post here. My lovely neighbour who is in his 70s has cancer, he was admitted to hospital a few days ago as he was in a lot of pain. I wanted to get him a gift to show him we are thinking of hI’m, but struggling to know what’s appropriate. He’s on morphine so I don’t know if food related gifts like fruit or chocolates would be appreciated or should I stick to small things like magazines and puzzle books etc, but I don’t know if he’s fit for those either. If anyone has suggestions for thoughtful or useful  gifts I can send with his son to the hospital I’d be very grateful. Thank you.

  • Hi Palesa welcome to the forum. I have a neighbour in a similar situation and I have made a point of calling in the one left at home and checking they are OK as I know this is something that would worry them both. Other neighbours have been baking or just keeping gardens tidy. Sometimes the practical tasks say more than physical gifts Gift. Hope that makes sense?

  • Hi Palesa

What about a blanket/throw that he can use at home and in hospital. I often felt chilly during treatment and it was suggested during chemo that I bought a blanket from home as something familiar and cosy.

If he is in pain and on medication he may also appreciate some fresh drinks (I liked lemon squash) and boiled sweets. Maybe also some toiletries to be able to freshen up. I took in wipes and it was good to freshen up by wiping my face and hands- without having to go to the bathroom.

One other thing would to maybe think about cooking something for when he is out of hospital.
