New to forum.  My husband who is 61 just diagnosed this week with tongue cancer. Had lymph node biopsies on wed and having biopsy of tumour on Monday. He is 61 and type 1 diabetic. He has had good health up until now. Problem started with persistant sore throat that gp failed to see as red flag. Feel angry and scared. Been told will be 6 weeks intensive radio and chemo therapy. Any one else had similar  situation

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your husband has just been diagnosed with tongue cancer and I know what a difficult time waiting to start treatment can be.

As the online community is divided into different support forums, I'm going to recommend that you also join the head and neck cancer forum which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences with others who have a similar diagnosis to your husband.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and proposed treatment to into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. • Hi  I know it’s been a few months since you posted but how is your husband ? Xx

  • Thank you so much for asking. He is doing really well. Ended treatment August 2024, all scans 12 weeks post treatment clear so in remission now. He is eating and drinking normally, still finds spicy food wee bit challenging but is persevering. His mouth still dry overnight but apart from that he is pretty much back to normal. He is back to work but has decided to reduce to 2 days a week as following last year we have a very different outlook on life and intend making most of our 2nd chance. We have been very lucky in that although treatment etc was very hard at the time the outcome for us has been so worth it. Thank you again for asking after him. The forum was a great comfort to us both before and during treatment .

  • My stepdad is in a similar situation he was diagnosed with oral cancer on tongue he has to have some surgery to remove some parts it sure what exactly yet. Did your husband have any surgery? I’m so glad to hear your husband is doing good and I’m hoping for a similar outcome xx

  • He never had surgery as was at base if tongue and was hpv positive which reacts very well to radiotherapy. He had a six week course of radiotherapy combined with chemo on week 1and week 6. It was tough but results have def been worth it. I hope all goes well with your stepdad. My husband had a peg tube inserted prior to starting treatment,he dudnt want this but in early weeks post treatment it was a godsend. He did try to eat throughout and we think that has made a big difference to how well he has recovered. That would be something I d encourage your stepdad to do eat for as long as he can . Sending you all the positive vibes and I m sure you will all get through this hard as it may seem just now . Xx

  • Thank you so much that has helped me be more positive xx
