Dad's Larynx cancer return missed by doctors - now stage 4

My dad was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer of the larynx last year.. he had radiotherapy which didn't work so they removed his voice box, some lymph nodes and parts of his thyroid... his recovery was OK, he got back to eating and learned to speak with his stoma... Unfortunately, just lately my dad hasn't been feeling good and wanted to go to hospital.. his cancer is back in 3 places and is stage 4...

My dad raised concerns months ago with the doctor about his neck not feeling right, they said it was his anatomy.. he went for a swallow test and they said he had a small hump behind his tongue, again they had no concerns... the tumours were there the whole time I believe, my dad wasn't even scanned after his op in October last year... they missed it.

My dad can't get chemo but they are offering immunotherapy.. they gave him 3 to 6 months but we are hoping that immunotherapy increases that...  if he was scanned they would have seen it.. its their fault... my dad is only 59... I am struggling with the thought of loosing him and the doctors are to blame

  • Hi

Sorry to read about what you have been going through, it is so worrying when we think of "what if..." and when it affects our faith in the doctors treating out loved ones.

If it helps you you might like to try seeing if a scan after that kind of surgery is normal practice, since my wife's cancer is very different I could not really say. One of the issues we have seen with scans of course is that they show up all sorts of things including of course scaring after surgery.

I know I needed some help coping with my wife's diagnoses, treatment and the rest. You might like to look at this blog post as it gives some tips but also can help us feel less alone and more normal - if the world we have ended up in can be called normal.

    <<hugs>>

  • The scans were more for the concerns my dad raised about his neck feeling different and the hump on his tongue, they didn't investigate it, they didn't raise the concerns so here we are... 8 months after his laryngectomy with stage 4 cancer in the places that he was concerned about
