Hi all,

My mum at the end of January was diagnosed with throat cancer which has spread, this is due to the HPV virus. Next Thursday she gets some biopsy results and then hopefully a treatment plan.
I guess my question is, how do I best support my mum? I don’t want to smother her but I want her to know I am there for her. She seems ok in herself but obviously her mind is running a mile a minute. I just want to know how I can be there for her as her daughter and look after her without suffocating her.

Thank you.

  • Hello FlowerPowerMum and a warm welcome to the forum though so sorry to hear about your mum and hope results are kind and treatment can begin soon, I looked after my mum when she had cancer and like your mum she seemed to cope ok and managed a degree of independence, which i tried to let her hold on too for as long as possible. but as her health slowly worsened i had to do more and more for her, as you get to know what your mum needs help with which will you will work out as you go along. The best thing you can do is to try to keep your relationship as normal as you can and keep telling your mum you love her. take care.

  • Hi Eddie,

Thank you so much for your response. she’s taken a turn for the worse slightly this week mentally as to her it must be taking so long but the doctors are being Amazing. I’m letting her have her moment and breathe and have told her I’m right here waiting for her for if and when she needs me. So horrible seeing my mum like this but of course to be expected with the rollercoaster of emotions. Thank you again & sending love and light to you and your mum.

  • Hi FlowerPowerMum, sorry to hear your mum is struggling a little emotionally, which as you say is normal, especially early on when waiting for results and treatment to start, things will get a little easier when treatment starts, which shouldn't be too long now, thank you for good wishes and sending hugs to you and your mum,
