End of life lung cancer patient insisting on staying at home

I'm in this group since my husband had cancer but am posting this as his uncle is terminally ill.

Uncle is 88 and has numerous health conditions including lung cancer.   His wife is also 88 and is struggling to wash and dress him.  Their only daughter is recovering from open heart surgery. They have been offered a hospital style bed to be put downstairs but the rooms are small and it would mean moving large furniture out.  The only bathroom is upstairs.

He was put under hospice care a few months ago - so far he's just had one visit from them, plus a visit from the respiratory team and a district nurse.  District nurse did a care questionnaire and told him he was not eligible for any free care.  We think this was probably due to him saying he could manage ok and so could his wife.  Oxygen is delivered weekly and he has managed to get downstairs for the day and back upstairs at night until recently. He took to bed last week as his cough was so bad but the GP who visited told him to get up and walk around!  Difficult as he needs oxygen to walk more than a few yards.

He fell over last night and was taken to hospital, xrayed (no injuries) and told he could return home.  The ambulance crew who took him in were surprised that he'd had no help.  His daughter was with him and told the hospital he was not going home until a care plan was put in place.  He was very insistent that he went home so as a compromise the hospital called the Hospice team and they agreed to put a care plan in place tomorrow.  Fingers crossed that will happen.  He's back home and the daughter is staying overnight.

My question is what can family do if the patient insists they want to be at home  despite being so unwell that family members cannot care for them?

  • Hi

It does sound like a very difficult situation and one that can be quite difficult to solve. Hopefully the care plan from the hospice team will help. Other than that it is important his family are honest and recognize their limitations and hopefully have support from their GPs and the team supporting their daughter after her operation too.

I wonder if it might be worth one of them talking to one of our finance advisers to check they are getting everything to which they are entitled that might help them decide on next steps they need to take.

    <<hugs>>
