Hey all,

i live in Dubai with my partner and cat. I work as a teacher out here. My mum has late stage pancreas cancer which was diagnosed last year.
today she’s been admitted into hospital as it’s spread to her bones and she’s in a lot of pain. I have 3 brothers and a step dad who all live in the uk with her.
i feel so useless being so far away but I’m not sure how I could help if I went back.

When will I know when to go home?

  • Hi

I am so sorry to hear this.  I really feel for what you are going through. I can imagine that it's really stressful and upsetting for you trying to juggle this.

Unfortunately I've lost a few friends and relatives to pancreatic cancer, 3 just this year and my father-in-law 6 years ago.

Once admitted to hospital, things have moved very quickly for them all. My friend died within 28 hours of admission.  The longest was a family friend who managed just over 4 weeks.  We lost them all very quickly and within the lower end of the Dr's timescale estimates.

If you would like to be with your mother I would recommend that you speak to her Doctor and prepare to be home at the lower end of the timescale with open ended leave.  (I know that's not easy in Dubai but I'm guessing it's an international school and hopefully better at giving permission to leave).

    Big hugs  xx

  • Personally I wouldn't be thinking about it I would be off to be with her.As I have pancreatic cancer also it's very scary and lonely.if you didn't go you will probably regret it.
