We recently had some devastating news that my dad has mouth cancer. We are yet to understand whether this is treatable as they want to investigate further anomalies in his lungs. If treatable then it’s life changing surgery (if my dad wants this).
struggling to see how I can support my dad (he’s shaken up and quiet at the moment). And my mum is doing amazingly but I’m worried she will crumble.
Any advice is appreciated on how to deal with this.
Hi Ac96
So sorry to hear about your dad and totally get your concern about him and your mum.
What can often help is listening and understanding. Perhaps if you start by looking at our pages on mouth cancer then when they talk about things you may be in a position to respond and even suggest where they might get some help. If they are online they (and you) might find some help in looking at our Head and neck cancer forum
Often the most important thing of all though - and one I learnt the hard way - remember to make some time for you. People often talk of feeling guilty or selfish or whatever but I found it easy to break me and harder to put me back together. Sometimes feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the people who did that though.
The cancer journey can feel a very lonely one - our lovely family on here is ready to stand beside you every step because tomorrow I may be the one needing the help.
<<hugs>>
Steve
